San Andreas was the worst GTA ever
It had an unlikable protagonist, horrible story, weak missions, and was filled with so many tedious tasks that it made it an unpleasant chore to play
GTA4 fixed all of that. The character is one of GTA's best, the story is well written and weaves everyone together, missions actually fit into the story and aren't useless jobs, and you can pick and choose what extra tasks you take without breaking down your character.
It's not even a contest.

GTAIV still feels like a chore. I got it the first day it came out and still haven't completed it. I loved the multi-player when people were actually on. GTAIV just wasn't that fun. I got SR2 the first day and played it all the way thru.. I'll probably play the rest of gtaIV before the Lost & Damned is releasedHmm, I'd say san andreas, because at the time; the game was a massive upgrade (compared to Vice City) whereas GTA:IV.. The upgrade for me in GTA IV was graphics mainly, GTA:IV Seemed to lack freedom. I'm not sure why.. the plot was enjoyable, missions were fun, but i had alot more gameplay value out of GTA:SA. I guess at the end of the day it's all down to how you like to play, Don't get me wrong though, I loved GTA:IV. I think a 10/10 Is over-rated, but i wouldn't put it much below a 9. Very good games, but GTA:SA tips it for me :)

Well, there are two sides to look at it.
If i would chose for the most realistic one, the one that made me feel i really was driving on a motercycle, i would go for GTA4,
But if you look at the game with the most fun i would go for San Andreas. The game is so filled with easter eggs and funny references to other things in the game.
yea i love gta 4 because of the pure realism well, . . . . . . in most areas anyway (examples of unrealistic scenarios: Nicko grabs a rocket launcher and blowsup 2-3 cars, yet all he has to do is run 20 metres and wait 20 seconds and they've given up looking, tut tut tut, i guess every game has its flaws, also it wudnt be fun if it were too realistic, anyways) you could have a life in that game, meet people on the internet (pfft who does that . . . wait a minute) and you could eat and have homes and cars, they shudnt have taken that "eat too much food and get fat, go to the gym once in a while" factor out. that was cool. i liked the friend thing on gta 4 and all the places you could go to have fun, the pool table especially (but it was gay how it automatically aimed for you) GTA 4 WAS A GOOD GAME. . . BUT SAN ANDREAS HAS ONE KEY ELEMENT THAT MAKES IT GREAT (NOT AS GOOD AS GTA 4 ) BUT STILL GREAT : IT HAD A FLYING CAR CHEAT AND THAT WAS @%&%& AWESOME, THAT WAS THE COOLEST MOST ENJOYABLE CHEAT EVER (especially if you got one of those old cars, painted it blue and pretended you were harry potter in chamber of secrets (AWESOME):D
I can't even believe this is heated in the forum, GTA 4 is dead has single player, poor story no side story and boring after you complete it. (took me 2days.) Only good thing about it is graphics which don't make a game if you think they do watch a dvd instead and online play (Wooo! that really makes a game good doesn't it...NO!) It was dull, had glitches and no matter how you played it was the same. GTA san andreas had everything but graphics and online play, thats why simply was and always will be the best one, had more everything, had rpg effect with your characters growth, character custom, massive open terrain air, land or sea. Ulike GTA 4 which you only need to use a boat or helicopter like once each in the entire game. Had brilliant and unrealistic story, you could own buildings, incredible in its time and quite simply lt was the best GTA ever, simple.stike22
Wrong
Want the fact that San Andreas was bad?
Rockstar decided to make GTA4 the way they did
They understood that San Andreas was a bad game and they changed every single part of the game to make GTA4. San Andreas is the only GTA ever made that did NOT have it's gameplay elements taken over to the next game. In all the previous games the gameplay introduced was brought over to the next.
When they started making GTA4 they left out everything from San Andreas
So yeah, San Andreas is a bad game and thankfully those who make the games understand that and we'll never have to see a game like San Andreas again.
Both games were fun in their own way.
San Andreas was gigantic, with more minigames and exploration than I could ever do. I like knowing that I don't have time to explore everything. Also, it was nice to feel like I was building my own criminal empire. Also, I enjoyed the early 90's setting. And the riots were cool. Really, it was an awesome game.
GTAIV is also awesome. It's like GTAIII with a dose of reality. Sure it's not as flashy as SA, but it takes it to a whole new level. The difference between SA and GTAIV is kind of like the difference between the last Pierce Brosnan Bond and Casino Royale. Pierce's movies had more gadgets and flash, but Casino Royale feels real.
I can't believe all the people saying GTA IV. GTA IV is garbage compared to GTA:SA. SA had so many things to do. More vehicles from jet planes to bicycles to attack choppers to jetpacks - and ya know what, stop whining about the jetpack people! The game didn't make you use it after the Area 51 mission so who cares? Since when is GTA about realism anyway?
GTA IV's liberty city was incredibly beautiful but also boring, like a vapid dumb blonde. Where in SA there was a broad sweeping country where you could go and find jumps and ridges and valleys to rally your cars in, GTA IV just has a boring bunch of city blocks.
SA had character customization with bad-ass clothes, a muscle/fat system, dual wielding weapons, etc. GTA IV has a guy with an overblown fake serbian accent and a beer gut that makes any clothes you buy in game look dumb. Oh, and he's a worthless errand boy who will betray anyone if the price is right. CJ had loyalty, Niko can't even keep his fat annoying cousin from getting shot!
And the so-called minigames in GTA IV sucked so bad, even the lame lowriding mission in SA was better. And who came up with the idea of all the unlikeable characters in the game calling you up to hang out? They should be kicked in the nuts.
Look, I could go on and on. GTA IV is just a pathetic entry in the GTA series, which is why the Saints Row series has taken over as king sandbox game. (maybe not in sales, but only morons use sales figures to support opinions)

All crap
San Andreas was a bore with stupid missions that had nothing to do with bringing the story together. OOO a jet pack, yeah that fit in really well, the freaking body system? No that was mundane busywork, not character development.
Hence the reason nothing in San Andreas was carried over to GTA4
The childish "hood" was a mistake. All those people who thought it was a bad idea were proven right when it failed to live up to the legacy of the former GTA's. Gang banging is not the best material to build a game on, maybe because it's so damn childish in real life that it becomes almost infantile in game form.
Again, anyone saying San Andreas is wrong because if San Andreas was good Rockstar wouldn't have scrapped it all for a completely new direction devoid of anything San Andreas had
I love all the GTAs and from beating them all, here's my list:
#1 - GTA II
#2 - GTA: Vice City
#3 - GTA IV
#4 - GTA: San Andreas
#5 - GTA: Vice City Stories
#6 - GTA III
#7 - GTA: Liberty City Stories
#8 - GTA
As for which is better, I like/enjoy all the GTA storylines... so it's just a matter of preference, because the gameplay is the same...
Carl Johnson is just as likeable as Niko Bellic, Vic Vance, Claude, and Toni Cipriani. I'm sure Johnny Klebitz(GTA IV: Lost and Damned) and Huang Lee(GTA: Chinatown Wars) are going to great additions to the Grand Theft Auto series of fun protagonist.
I thought San Andreas was slightly better it felt more like an adventure epic, you start off as skinny dude with no money and a family in the ghetto to becoming something of a crimelord.
I also liked CJ a little better he seemed to care for the people around him more, like getting rid of the drug dealers in his neighbourhood and then the entire city (Los Santos). I liked GTA's graphics and the city was cool to play in but overall San Andreas had more going for it in terms of story, characters and activities.
