I think what they are doing is expanding on Liberty City so it is a better representation of New York. Perhaps not just New York City but the whole state of New York will be converted over to the GTA universe. GTA San Andreas was a state of three cities as well.

Then why was True Crime: Streets of New York any more acceptable? That was an 18. It's not due to licensing issues over a city name. It's the fact that Rockstar are calling the city Liberty City to keep it withing the GTA world.

It is modelled on New York, with all the landmarks of New York, but it is NAMED Liberty City so that thye can have the previous characters and such if they want to. Look at the trailer again, and you'll see: Liberty Ferry Terminal, a sign for the Liberty Tree and the large boat labelled Liberty City under the name. All these clues tell you that the city is called Liberty City, but from what we see is obviously based on modern day New York.

Maybe just a little bit, but I was definantly suprised. It looks different, so it shouldn't be that too much similar. I was hoping they went back to the gangster theme though. I thought San Andreas was the best in the series. Maybe if they set it somewhere in the south like Atlanta would have been cool, but whatever.

The Los Angeles we know and love today didn't have landmarks that define the city a few years ago. Downtown Los Angeles has changed a lot since the late 80's.
