Ok.... I know that everyone has heard about this so called Xbox 360 Ultimate that is supposed to be rumored to be released later this year right? Built in HD DVD drive, wifi, 320 gig HD ETC. ETC. I just got the Elite for Christmas and it's going right back to the store! This is just pure crazy on M$ part. For all of you that have your hope in believing that this is pure "rubbish" and that HD DVD games won't exist....you're out of your mind.

I've read so many posts last night and this morning talking about, "there's no way that they will develop HD DVD games because of the millions of xbox members", "no way they would add a built in HD DVD drive", "it would cost too much", "they already have too many SKUs" etc. etc. etc. BUT let's think about this for a minute. First of all these quotes are coming from people that already have an xbox and feel cheated. I believe that there WILL be HD DVD games coming to xbox in the future. 360 is already limited to only 9 gigs on disk, and developers have reached that limit and have started to compress things to get it to fit (Assassin's Creed...GTA IV) So what's supposed to happen when games can't be developed on DVD 9? I'll tell you..... XBOX ULTIMATE with HD DVD built in drive. Believe if you want to that they will NOT develop games for HD DVD. So you mean to tell me developers are going to have a 360 with HD DVD and say well guess we can't use that extra space.....THAT'S A LIE. I guess this is M$ way of competing with Blu Ray or at least putting up a fight.

Some of you may say that...this won't happen because DVD is standard for XBOX games.... ok. Well, that was one of the "underlining" points of the HD DVD add on. MS was getting us ready for this. In the future it's possible that you guys will be using/buying an HD DVD add on to play HD DVD GAMES!!! It's not a far fetched idea is it? There's no contract or promise or anything from MICROSOFT that states "WE WILL NOT MAKE GAMES ON HD DVD EVER"

We all know that M$ should have made the system like this from the beginning. Well, Remember when all of those rumors splurged up about the "new xbox elite" was coming... bigger hard drive HDMI out and a nice matte black color....people said that was pure rubbish too.... and now look.... the Elite is here and now AND all 360s come HDMI standard!

M$ claimed at launch there was NO NEED for HDMI or 1080p, no need to have a built in HD DVD player, or to have a bigger HD, no need for wifi ...but for some strange reason.... all of these things are being added slowly but SURELY. Heck there's even rumors that there is going to be a MOTION SENSING CONTROLLER TOO from xbox LMAO. MARK MY WORDS! Just like the Elite came true....so will this come true. Look at this also... Look how many versions of Windows Vista they have out.... isn't "ULTIMATE" the top of the line of Vista.... the apple doesn't fall from the tree.

Guess I'll stick to my other "next gen" console until this comes out plus the 08 line up isn't looking that "exclusive" this time around anywayz.

so wait your gonna return your elite for a rumor that has been going around for quite some time. This rumor was posted back in the summer and then died off. I bet the next xbox will have all those qualities. I don't think you owned an elite in the first place with the way your talking. Not to mention your looking at 08's lineup which looks promising imo and ignoring all the games released already.

While this new sku rumor is possible I highly doubt it. I would suspect an announcement about IPTV or some other new LIVE functions.

well there is suppose to be a big announcement at CES by MS could be it, and after the previous versions that have come out id would not suprise me. But to make games on HD-DVD and to make people by a an add on to play them would be Straight suicide IMO, MS would lose so many loyal customers over an add-on like that, they should just save this for the next xbox esepcially if they are planning for it to come out in like 3 more years

for all we know, even if this "Ultimate 360" is released...it'll most likely be at the end of the year...do you mind waiting that long? if so, then its a good choice.

I think another sku is unnecessary, all that's going to do is piss off customers who already have one or just bought one and give Sony ammunition.

And just why have these rumors resurfaced?

Because CES is right around the corner. Of course rumors will resurface, hopes will go up, etc. It happens every year.

Dude CES is next week and all rumors will be squashed. If it is true then it is true. Still HD-DVD games are not coming. Why would a developer make a game on HD-DVD when the whole 360 audience barely has a HD player. Devs want to make money and they wont sell anything by making the game on a HD disk. As a dev you want to sell to those 13 million people not to these new adoptor of a HDDVD 360.

My opinion from all these rumors is that the new SKU is something that the companies that are doing the IPTV are the ones who are going to be selling these in there new cable IPTV boxes. Even in those rumors it is saying that MS is going to license the tech to other companies to make their own devices with 360 intergrated. Imagine a Toshiba PC or Notebook with all you pc functions and also a full 360. These thing do come with every thing listed in these rumors.

Even if MS allowed devs to place their games on HD-DVD discs (which I consider to be highly unlikely) the devs themselves would have to choose to do so. Considering the number of DVD game 360's (all of them) versus HD-DVD game 360's (currently none and will be competing with their other SKU's and the installed base if they do come out) the choice would be very clear: DVD for the immediate and foreseeable future. It would not be fiscally responsible to develop a game on HD-DVD in this generation of Xbox hardware considering that 100% of the hardware in homes already is DVD based. There would be a vicious circle to overcome to change this: gamers saying "we'll buy one if you develop games for it" and devs saying "we'll develop games for it if you buy it". Given enough time the number of HD-DVD game 360's might grow greater than the DVD version, but by then I would bet the next generation of hardware would be here or coming soon. Also, it would be a bad idea on MS's part as well. They would be dividing their userbase into the haves and have nots as well as complicating the development of games for their hardware as I've already mentioned. The time for HD-DVD games was at the launch of the console. Adding it now makes no sense from any perspective.

Ya know...

There are also rumors that Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming to the 360. (Not happening, I know.)

But that doesn't mean I'm going to trade in my games at GameStop to reserve a copy.

They won't be able to call it a 360 if all the games come out in HD-DVD, yah know... That'd mean that the 360s we have now... won't play 360 games. >_>

Exactly! Sony jumped the HD format craze from the get go. MS missed the boat. The time for an internal HD-DVD drive was 11/22/05. From what I understood though, the reason Sony had to push the PS3 launches back was due to the complications with the Blu-Ray drives (maybe accquring them??). MS probably had the same decision to either wait for the HD-DVD drives or hit the scheduled release date with standard DVD drives instead and add it on later.

I say keep your elite and enjoy it now. If M$ does release another one then sell or trade in your elite. Personally I wouldn't be suprise if M$ release another SKU, after all this is Micro$oft we are talking about. If they do release another SKU I hope I will be able to play HD-DVD games on my HD-DVD add-on. If not then Xbox 360 will be the last game console for me

MS won't let developers release games that require a hard drive let alone HD-DVD. Keep your Elite and buy the add on drive and you will be just fine.

ur are wrong about there being HD-DVD games. That would all out stupid move by MS. if that does happen software sales would hit rock bottom, and the xbox 360 would be finished.

True this is all speculation but they could enable the HD DVD add on to play HD DVD games through a firmware update. It is possible, we surely don't know for sure.

One thing i could see potentially if they launch an hd-dvd 360 is devs putting it in both formats. Like the days where games for pcs were on cds and you could buy the dvd version. So instead of getting ur game on 3 disks and u have this "ultimate" model you could buy the hd-dvd version instead.

If this new sku is true this could eleviate the issue for them without ticking everyone off. I think they would then start to phase out the dvd models and replacing them with the hd-dvd as standard. Yes people would complain but at least if this goes down this way no one is left out other than someone has multiple disks and the other doesn't.

ya need to chill out, for a start with windows the main reason peoples computers all act differently because they is no set standard, every pc is different, different kit having to co-operate and work with other kit, bound to be setups that dont work as well as others., the pc is a mircle in its self that we can have machines where no one manufacters parts are in everyones machines and they all can work and run software desinged to run over millions if not billions of different setups of hardware. ya bring together about a dozen different bits of kit some arnt going to work well with each other as others, same with software some might work well with certain hardware, others might not its the way pcs go. its they main strength and weakness

as for a rumoured xbox ur taking things too far. if its true its not out till near the end of this year, would you really of waited with no xbox until then to buy it.

and if it did come out with a hd dvd drive built in which is a smart move i reckon, pointless paying over £100 for a seperate when you should be able to pay the extra and buy a system with the drive built in as a option. it dont mean that they will start to cut off the users of premium, core, arcade, pro, elite systems , it dont make business sense. they promised they wouldnt and they also did the same over the hard drives and they are only about 2 exceptions to the rule of games that require a hard drive to run.

i honestly think if they ever did take the jump and say ok we cant fit the newest games onto a single dvd no more and keep them upto date with the latest graphics etc, then they would just go for the option of spreading the games over multiple discs just like they done with blue dragon., they never made a dvd-hd disc of that did they. to be honest if that became the crack which i dont think it will, i would think they would bring out a dvd-hd one and a multidisc dvd release. but i honestly think until they bring out a new console you wont see many games on dvd-hd if any, and those that will will be out on multi discs also.

think about they aint daft. the sales for the hd dvd drive aint really been that great, including it is a good move, but if you work out that most people dont even have one then the games themself wont sell many if dvd-hd is the only option . as they never going to get a game that everyone who has hd dvd will buy, its always going to be far far less the number of people who buy it.

your just going over the top, you bought an elite so what, think about people who bought a premium then the elite come out. take it back to the shop and tell them why, i bet they think your a mug

best reply all day. I agree with this. Like I said before, I believe that HD DVD games will be standard soon. they can't afford to let blu ray keep having all of this space while xbox games turn into 3-4 disc standard lol. This is why this is and will happen. Surely no one will be left in the cold. I don't think MS is that spiteful, enabling that HD DVD add on to play games will be the smartest move for older adopters, if in fact this is true...

For all of you that have your hope in believing that this is pure "rubbish" and that HD DVD games won't exist....you're out of your mind.

naaaaa I like them both...

Guess I'll stick to my other "next gen" console until this comes out plus the 08 line up isn't looking that "exclusive" this time around anywayz.

lol, if anything you should return your "other console"

One thing i could see potentially if they launch an hd-dvd 360 is devs putting it in both formats. Like the days where games for pcs were on cds and you could buy the dvd version. So instead of getting ur game on 3 disks and u have this "ultimate" model you could buy the hd-dvd version instead.

If this new sku is true this could eleviate the issue for them without ticking everyone off. I think they would then start to phase out the dvd models and replacing them with the hd-dvd as standard. Yes people would complain but at least if this goes down this way no one is left out other than someone has multiple disks and the other doesn't.

karmageddon2k4

yeah thats obviousily the way to roll out it out for this console, a game would 100% flop even if it was halo 4 if it was only on hd dvd.

plus they all rumours, no matter how many links the lad has, just means they all published the rumour, cud be true, good thing if it is. the better xboxes get then better the games can be, id welcome multidisc games as i would probs be getting better graphics for my money

Yeah, sounds like you hate Xbox anyway. Why would you return it and spend more money on a bigger system? How long have you worked for sony?

best reply all day. I agree with this. Like I said before, I believe that HD DVD games will be standard soon. they can't afford to let blu ray keep having all of this space while xbox games turn into 3-4 disc standard lol. This is why this is and will happen. Surely no one will be left in the cold. I don't think MS is that spiteful, enabling that HD DVD add on to play games will be the smartest move for older adopters, if in fact this is true...

they would loose so much money and make the dvdhd xbox games commercial unviable, after all the games need to make money. adding new things to the xbox is a good thing people shudnt be scared, id love a motion sensor controller too, ripping the wii but honestly gamepads are the most ripped thing out there. one makes a change they all copy if its good, and only thing the wii has on the xbox is the controller, imagine xbox graphics with wii style controller for the games that suit it, id object if its necessity but if its optional then that would be great

BTW just to let you know the Xbox Ultimate specs are from last year and they originally rumoured it for the elite, so this a rumour that was completely squashed and is now re-surfacing and also If Microsoft was to do your so called HD-DVD games idea they would give all the previous owners a HD-DVD add on so they dont feel screwed

lol why is everyone a fan boy if they dont like a xbox, anyways i think he thought they might be coming out straight away not like in nearly a year. and wud of bought the better one if he had a choice.

id put money on no one who dont upgrade getting left out the cold by games only for hd dvd just wudnt make business sense. and ms pretty good at business , ya dont have to tell them that people wudnt be able to make the grade for hd dvd only games, its obvious to most that they wudnt sell like dvd games

I don't hate xbox... why would I hate xbox if I have one or even If I feel cool with shelling out more money for a better one. Don't assume that you "know a sony fanboy when you see one". I like the Xbox and I like the PS3. I have both consoles for a reason.... because I like games and I'm a gamer.

You have to remember that more people own standard DVDs and DVD players then they do HD-DVDs, drives or even Blu-Ray discs and drives. DVD format isn't going away anytime soon. So yeah, it is possible that in the next, oh say, 4-7 years HD-DVD might be the standard, but not now. By then MS will have a new console out. DVD games are the best we're going to get with this generation of 360.

I don't think the data transfer on a USB cable is going to work out that great for games though, so the HD-DVD add-on for early adopters would be practically useless for games.

that would make the most sense however not for a console that is only suppose to lsat what only 3 more years according to when they want the next xbox to come out so, also i dont see why you wouldnt be able to play regualar dvd on it you can play PS2 games on the PS3 and they are not blu-ray so thats not an excuse its just really not logical to add it to this gen and just put it in next xbox, it dont really matter one way or the other i guess to me i will never shell out for another one i have had mine since launch and it works just fine for me.

Stuff Specs Out The Xbox 360 "Ultimate"

xbox_360_ultimate_rumor.jpgBill Gates and the Microsoft crew are rumored to be planning something big for next week's Consumer Electronics Show, but we've got nothing but speculation to tide us over until then. Gadget mag Stuff, however, thinks it has-or genuinely has-the scoop on what's coming down the product pipeline from Redmond. The Xbox 360 Ultimate, Stuff writes, will be hitting store shelves by this autumn and feature "1080p HDMI output, built-in Wi-Fi, hi-def audio output, cooler 65nm hardware architecture and a near-silent fan." On top of all that, the IPTV service that MS touted at last year's CES will be good to go.

Also included in the Ultimate, according to Stuff? A 320GB hard drive and HD-DVD drive. While we have our doubts about the authenticity of the details, the news seems a bit too matter of fact to ring false. Is someone at Stuff simply letting the cat out of the bag early? Perhaps we'll know more this Sunday, when we report directly from CES '08.

http://kotaku.com/339793/stuff-specs-out-the-xbox-360-ultimate

If you don't hear about it by CES, then it's just a rumor.

well they no set or any announcements about a new xbox coming out on any particular year, but wudnt mind see them bring it out early b4 ps4 like they did this time, seems to have made the console what it is taking the early jump, just like the ps2had the advantage over the old xbox coz the old xbox missed the launch . i usually buy what has the most games and most cheap ones 2nd hand. probst take me a year or so to get a new one so i can get cheap games and also see how many of my friends get one also which is main thing i need to be able to play and swap games with people i knar
