Ok I know this question might sound stupid to some people but I have never really known for 100% sure. Are the songs in gutair hero covers? Are the singers the original ones or are they someone just covering them? Because honestly a few songs I can not tell they sound pretty legit to me

Most of them are covers and very few are master tracks.

mostly covers and most of them are surprisingly good but some are really laughably bad like Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana for instance. The singer makes me laugh everytime time when he tries to sound like Kurt.

yeah most of them are covers..on guitar hero II the secret songs aren't.  But the rest are...I think.  Some are pretty good, some are terrible.  They should have danzig sing em all on the next game.  That would be hilarious.

when you start the song, it says at the top left either,

"as performed by" -which means its the real song

or

"as made famous by" -which means its a cover

Most of them really sound nearly perfect though. But some of them are really bad. Example: "Woman" by: Wolfmother, Awesome (Really couldn't tell the difference) "Killing in the Name" by: Rage Against the Machine, Horrible (But an awesome song)
