I just picked the game up last year and had the same feelings as you. What was the big deal? But you forget, the game came out ages ago, and for it's time, was ground breaking. Most FPS we play today wouldn't be here if it wern't for that game. So while we think it's dated, the people who played it when it FIRST came out will always have fond memories of this game for raising the bar on what an FPS should be. Hope that helps?

Yeah, that helps and I definitely understand that. However, are Episodes 1 and 2 at least more fun? I really hope I didn't just buy The Orange Box for Portal and TF2 alone.

Half Life 2 came out in 2004! Thats not that long ago. And FPS games havent changed much since the early doom days, just better graphics, ai, etc.
So dont try and make it sound like its dated.
Graphics, yes, but gameplay, its more advanced then call of duty 4.
Call of duty games have very linear gaming experienced, and is very repetetive compared to a game like Half Life 2.
Where call of duty 4 got popular by, was from its multiplayer. Half life 2 main focus was not multiplayer, so if that was what you were expecting then you are playing the wrong game.
If we go by gameplay standards on whats more old school, then call of duty 4 is the dated game, in the gameplay department that is.
Just try another game then... Not everybody feels the same about every game.

I thought Episode two was the best one.in has a brilliant story. get into it, appreciate the gameplay mechanics, characters, and thought put into it. and you should love it.
episode 1 shows the aftermath of the events of hl2 (thus its original name, hl2 aftermath). episode 2 takes players out of the city and into the country, and trying to meet up with your allies, and setting up the upcoming episode 3. it, unllike previous hls has mountains woodlands areas, and offers a different open area style of playing
Half life 2 is one of my favourite games ever but yes, like all games, is not to everyones taste. I would stick with it as the game takes you to lots of interesting (and creepy) places that you might find more fun. My girlfriend always asks me whats so special about this game....I guess its the way that I think Valve have created a world thats so believable. The environments, characters, weapons and the sound effects are spot on (even better with earphones).
I also think the achievements are great fun and has added lots of replayability for me.
I hope you stick with the game for a while longer and that it grows on you. If not, at least you have Portal!! haha
The first part of the game is pretty much like any other FPS. I thought it was pretty boring and that I had done it all before, in a different package too, until I was able to use the gravity gun. That stupid thing saved the game for me. Very cool weapon. The level with all the zombies was sweet. You could use the gravity gunto shoot circular saw blades. Sweet.
The online is pretty cool though. I really liked Portal too.
