I just picked up the Orange Box and completed everything through the Water Hazard level. Please tell me the game gets a lot better than this! I've heard such amazing things about this game, but so far, it's incredibly boring. I keep finding myself wanting to shut it off and pop in CoD4 instead even though I've played that game to death. Does it get better or what? Thanks for the responses

I just picked the game up last year and had the same feelings as you. What was the big deal? But you forget, the game came out ages ago, and for it's time, was ground breaking. Most FPS we play today wouldn't be here if it wern't for that game. So while we think it's dated, the people who played it when it FIRST came out will always have fond memories of this game for raising the bar on what an FPS should be. Hope that helps?

Yeah, that helps and I definitely understand that. However, are Episodes 1 and 2 at least more fun? I really hope I didn't just buy The Orange Box for Portal and TF2 alone.

Half Life 2 came out in 2004! Thats not that long ago. And FPS games havent changed much since the early doom days, just better graphics, ai, etc.

So dont try and make it sound like its dated.

Graphics, yes, but gameplay, its more advanced then call of duty 4.

Call of duty games have very linear gaming experienced, and is very repetetive compared to a game like Half Life 2.

Where call of duty 4 got popular by, was from its multiplayer. Half life 2 main focus was not multiplayer, so if that was what you were expecting then you are playing the wrong game.

If we go by gameplay standards on whats more old school, then call of duty 4 is the dated game, in the gameplay department that is.

Just try another game then... Not everybody feels the same about every game.

It's a very slow game but give it a chance. It's quite good in the last hour.

It definetly gets better as you go on. I personally found the game to be one of my favorites, great weapons, story (didn't play the first half-life), and AI. Also it wasn't reptitive as far as levle design.

I honestly feel for you if you don't like HL2. It is arguably my favorite game of all time. Maybe you had to be a fan back in the HL1 days to fully enjoy it I guess. The ambience, story, and immersion in that game are just amazing!

I thought Episode two was the best one.

in has a brilliant story. get into it, appreciate the gameplay mechanics, characters, and thought put into it. and you should love it.

episode 1 shows the aftermath of the events of hl2 (thus its original name, hl2 aftermath). episode 2 takes players out of the city and into the country, and trying to meet up with your allies, and setting up the upcoming episode 3. it, unllike previous hls has mountains woodlands areas, and offers a different open area style of playing

Half life 2 is one of my favourite games ever but yes, like all games, is not to everyones taste. I would stick with it as the game takes you to lots of interesting (and creepy) places that you might find more fun. My girlfriend always asks me whats so special about this game....I guess its the way that I think Valve have created a world thats so believable. The environments, characters, weapons and the sound effects are spot on (even better with earphones).

I also think the achievements are great fun and has added lots of replayability for me.

I hope you stick with the game for a while longer and that it grows on you. If not, at least you have Portal!! haha

I actually bought this game for TF2 and Portal. Never really got into half-life, so it was a total surprise to me just how good HL2 and Ep. 1 and 2 were. I like the oldschool gameplay, insofar as health packs are necessary and there is no recharging life bar (man that's overplayed now...). I also loved the lack of ammo, meaning it is necessary to keep strong weapons for use against stronger enemies. Too many games these days can be blazed through using a pistol and hiding behind boxes waiting for your health or shields to magically reappear. On a side note, one of the most annoying things about CoD is how the easiest route to ammo is team-killing any Pvt.'s on the team, but then the game ends if you kill an important character. Something seems mixed up there... Even the difficulty (which can borderline on insane in some areas) was a welcome change of pace. Sure, there are parts in CoD that are hard, but only based on the infinite stream of enemies until passing a particular spawn point. I dunno, hopefully the TC will give it another shot and enjoy it. It's far from outdated (or, at least, if it IS outdated, then I must be ancient at this point).

I have problems with Half Life too. I want to play it, but unfortunately the game gives me motion sickness - I am not sure why - it is only on this game. I have absolutely no problems with any other FPS just this one. I am at Water Hazard as well and just haven't progressed because I feel so sick playing it. :(

Yeah I like HL 1 so I guess it was just a given that Id like HL2... but anways its a great game and when you add episode 1 and 2 on it makes the game quite lengthy. Episdoe 2 is the best IMO but the eniter series is great. Play through each of the games and if you dont like it trade it in.... but I bet you will change your mind :)

The game picks up once you get the gravity gun. Also, a lot of people didn't like Route Kanal, but I enjoyed most of the vehicle sequences.

It all depends on the player and how they interpret the game and generally they base how good or bad a game is in comparison to what they feel is great. Personaly i think the entire Half-Life series is an amazing game and sets high standers when it comes to physics in a FPS, most gamers that havent played Half-Life 2 thinks that its boring and has out dated graphics with no multiplayer included, me i look at Half-Life's story and the amazing amount of orignality it contains in comparison to the repetitive, unoriginal movement of WW2 games that the Call of Duty developers keep pushing down are throats. In conclusion Half-Life 2 is a great game by any standard, it does get better and i actually like the Call of Duty series for the amount of intense action and historical accuracy it brings to games(excluding Modern Warfare which is great too).

The first part of the game is pretty much like any other FPS. I thought it was pretty boring and that I had done it all before, in a different package too, until I was able to use the gravity gun. That stupid thing saved the game for me. Very cool weapon. The level with all the zombies was sweet. You could use the gravity gunto shoot circular saw blades. Sweet.

The online is pretty cool though. I really liked Portal too.
