There! I said it, the covenant backstory in Halo 2 is suspiciously similar to that of the Tau if you ask me. I would be glad to explain to anyone who disagrees/wonders what I'm talking about. I would have put this in an original Xbox forum, but I didn't see one.

OK. I don't really care, Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War and Halo are both great games. Plus, because the story is similar, it doesn't mean they stole it.

You are equating the Ethereals with the prohpets, which I think is way off. The Ethereals didn't start a crusade to wipe out humanity. They taught the Tau about the Greater Good while the Prophets used superior firepower and a story of the "Great Journey" to win the Elites over.

That certainly is a part of it. But honestly, -Great Good vs Great Journey. -An alien floating a sleekly curved hover-chair with a large crown(ish) thing on his head vs the same. -Drones vs Vespids, which seem to be nearly the exact same thing; flying bugs with sharp claws who shoot things in fairly large numbers. There are some similarities that are simply too obvious to be coincidence. What is the Covenant in Halo 2, for example? A large congregation of various alien species united under one master race, the Prophets. And the Tau Empire? A large congregation of various alien species united under one master (sub)race, the Ethereals. That was my reasoning, but feel free to disagree with it. P.S. didn't the Ethereals win over the Tau with a story of 'The Greater Good'? Also, they seem to be rather eager to crush anyon who won't side with them, as do the Covenant. P.S.S. sorry about all this editing, but it seems the Kroot and jackals are similar as well, with the exception of the shields.

Oy! You need to learn about the subject before you go flapping your mouth. I said Warhammer 40,000; which is (sadly enough) quite different from it's computer counterpart Dawn of War. There is such thing as a table top game.

Everything is a copy (to some extent) of everything that came before. What matters is if its done well.

Actually the Battle of Thermopylae took place 1700 years before William Wallace fought off the English invaders.

You haven't noticed this before? Warhammer 40k was created... Starcraft (was supposed to be Warhammer 40k game) came out.... and Halo is basically a carbon copy of Starcraft. Humans = Terrans, Covenant = Protoss, Flood = Zerg. So if Halo = Starcraft then Halo would = Warhammer 40k.

I'm not sure if you were being serious or not here, and if you weren't, ignore the rest of my post. If I take your definition of "carbon copy," which is "bears the slightest resemblance," then I'm pretty sure I can make almost anything in science fiction or fantasy a rip-off of anything else. Here:

  • UNSC: Ripoff of either the Empire or the Rebels in Star Wars. The have big ships and fighters, they all shoot at stuff, and important people in the organization are addressed as "lord"; carbon copy.
  • Marines: Obvious ripoff of Heinlein. No further comment necessary (other than "carbon copy").
  • Elites: The Elites are the Minbari from Babylon 5, 'cause they're concerned with warfare and bigger ships than the humans; carbon copy.
  • Grunts: These are clearly hobbits, except they're evil. They're small, easily frightened, and they enjoy sleeping; carbon copy.
  • Flood: Well, the Flood are obviously the Borg from Star Trek, 'cause they both assimilate stuff; carbon copy.

As I look back at what I just wrote, intending to be funny, I seriously see more parallels in some of my examples than in what you posted.

Ultimately, the Halo universe incorporates a lot of common SF plot elements. Its really not as compelling or creative as its generally made out to be imo.

Well Jesus Christ, I'm sorry for having an opinion everyone, I'll be sure and just go along with what other people say for the rest of my life and see how far I go. Probably about 15 miles into the nearest trailer park, where I would live and feel how I felt about things because people told me that was how I felt and how I should live. FUN!

Does this mean Mass Effect is a carbon copy of Star Wars? If so, who cares? Does it really affect you? Does it really matter? The fact is it doesn't. As long as the game is good, which it is, and as long as it's fun to play, which it is...then none of your points are relevant in the slightest. Yeah, you can feel that way all you want because it's your opinion and you have every right to express it but you should also try exercising a little common sense as well.
