Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Halo 2 video game racked up sales of $125 million the day it hit the market. The world's largest software company believes that sales of the new Halo 3 game will be even larger. Aside from a version of the game for the Xbox 360, there will also be a Halo 3 for the Microsoft Zune.

According to one video game review publication, the newest version of the game is meant to fend off competition for the Sony (NYSE: SNE) PS3 and Nintendo Wii.

Video game industry experts say that Halo 3 has four million pre-orders from retailers, compared with 1.5 million for the launch of Halo 2. If that is true, it may add to the troubles for the already shaky start of the new PS3. Most surveys show the new Sony platform's sales lagging the unexpectedly popular Wii and the Xbox.

Wall Street and the gaming industry did not expect that Xbox, which was launched in late 2001, had much of a chance of catching Sony. The Japanese company simply had too large a lead. But, it is now Sony that is struggling to move back into first place. PS3 problems have even been blamed for the departure from Sony of PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi.

The Microsoft way is to enter a business, out-develop and out-spend competition, and then finish them off. It seems to be working against Sony.

When they say "experts" do they mean forum goons? I'd like to know their source... I thought Gamespot already said this rumor was bogus.

I'm pretty sure HALO will be an instant success. But 4 millions pre order? 4 / 10 people? I doubt that

I have it preordered already, I can't remember if it's legendary version or not...

but I can't wait, and it might just be a rumour, unless bungie or microsoft has said anything it probably is.

I dont mean to be a monkey in the wrench here but I have never understood the hype about Halo. Honestly it's beyond me why the game is THAT successful and iconic. I have a 360 and im no sony fan but i look at Halo and all i can still see is a pretty decent shooter.

+'s

>Both had fun unlinear gameplay and clever enemies INITIALLY

>Great Graphics and visuals

>Fun, fast multiplayer

-'s

>Both turned into glorified balloon shooting games as the flood would boil levels down to running backwards and shooting a never ending mass of mindless foes

>Both games were also only fast paced run and gun shooters without giving you a second's satisfaction for your kills

>Now looking at halo 3 vids all i see is the exact same gameplay as before with a new look and polish

Im really not looking to tick anyone off and the facts with four million copies being pre-ordered prove me wrong but can anyone say why halo is so big? Honestly i can think of a lot more games id rather play than halo and others way more significant than me think the same:

Anyone else think halo is waay overrated?

Well it's popular because people like it.  I dont' understand how hard it is for some people to grasp.  Sure, not everyone will like it, and not everyone will think it's the best game, but get over it.  It's popular because there's something about it most people like in a game, why else would so many people play it?  Not everyone is meant to like every game, but just because you don't like one game or believe it's worth the hype doesn't mean that everyone feels the same.

Haven't you ever really liked something that others didn't really get into? It's the same thing.  Different strokes for different folks.  On the other hand there are games that scored poorly and other people hated that I really enjoyed.  So to each their own, but trying to justify and comprehend other's opinions is a pointless expedition.

Thats pretty ridiculous considering their system is fairly cheap to make. Who are they out spending and out developing. ?Iunno i just dont like these typical stupid articles. But back to the topic at hand.....4 million preorders makes 4 million fanboys. Thats pretty damn impressive. Will make halo 3 an instant success. But that was obvious from the day it was announced. We'll see how ood this game is come wednesday. I still most likely wont be buying it anyway

I agree. Really if you don't like Halo it is probably because you don't like First Person Shooters. I'm about 85 percent sure of that. The other 15% are either tools or just in general don't like First Person Shooters. I can accept that, I mean I used to get annoyed with Doom at first then I really just got into it and I really started getting into the good ones. Some reallllllly Suck like KillZone which was pure boring Trash that should have the developer drug out in the street and shoot. But that is just my opinon.

Lol well i'd have to contradict your argument there.MAybe the 14% tools and the 1% that just dont like halo. Id be in the one percent because i love FPS and believe me im no tool. And yea i liked killzone. Meh, "Different strokes for different folks" like eddie said.

The 1,5 Million copies of HALO2 pre-orders are the North Americas part, put together that with the Europeans around 1 Million preorders and you get 2,5 Millions so I don't think 4 Million H3 copies on Pre-orders are an impossible figure. And it's still half a year left until release...

Halo 2 has a total sell of around 10 Million copies worldwide. Thats 50% of all XBOX users. Thought I don't know how many of those games where bought for the X360.

And of course I'm going Beta the day after tomorrow, add me on XBL...

Wow. 4 Million people, I'm glad I got into that zone, after all those copies are sent out/picked up, it would be way hard to find a copy in stores.
