Would I really need to play Halo 1 and 2's campaign to understand the third? I played half of the first Halo and my friends have been tellin me all aobut Halo 2's campaign... soo is it a must to understand Halo 3?

Same story for me too. But I'll still get it since from what I've played and read the story isn't complicated at all. It's just epic. Go to wiki or something. They'll tell you about the events and characters.

playing the first two im sure would be the best thing, but i'm sure looking up the story online will suffice.

For a super quick synopsis, go to IGN.com and click on the XBOX360 tab. They just put an article up on the "History of Halo". It's a good little summary if you don't want to be totally lost.
