Actually Halo Wars takes place before Halo 1,2,3. But it was released after them. Just play them in the order you have. Reach is also a prequel. ODST happens during Halo 2.

Just play the games the way you want to play them. You'll get nothing out of them if you play them with story continuity in mind because you won't get much more out of it. Very little story comes through in the Halo games anyway. Also there is a talking plant in Halo 2. That way take you a while to get over.

Chronologically it's.... Halo Wars Halo Reach Halo: Combat Evolved Halo 2 and Halo 3 ODST(both are happening at the same time) Halo 3 Personally I think you should play them in the order they were released in. It'll give you better perspective on how the series in terms of gameplay and tech has evolved. Each game was created with the past in perspective, so even though they weren't really released in chronological order they still kept past developments in mind. There are certain surprises in Halo: Combat Evolved that would be ruined if you played Halo Wars before it. There are also certain surprises in Halo 2 that would be ruined by ODST if you played it beofre Halo 2 even though the two games are happening at the same time(more or less).

Sure, if you cover your ears every time you play... It may not be Mass Effect but Halo sure as hell has a story.

this. But for the record you might as well go Wars, Reach, 1, 2, ODST, 3.

While I agree that Halo has a pretty good universe and lore developed for it, I think the story in the games is pretty bland and not always easy to follow. All you really need to know is Master Chief is fighting the Covenant and Flood, and that's about it.

I wouldn't say it's any worse than any other shooter I've played. It's enjoyable.

to get the full experience me thinks you should play in this order:

1. Halo: Combat Evolved - this just grips you and lays down the basics of the story

2. Halo 2 - continues the story of the characters you'll come to love in the first game

3. Halo 3: ODST - this'll give you a super intricate look into the covenant invasing earth

4: Halo 3 - finish the fight

5. Halo Wars - this'll get you the backstory of the capability of the unsc and the pre-master chief era

6. Halo: Reach - the topping of you spartan loving dessert. a cornocopia of all the halo goodness in one package

i'm the dude that loves hbo and bought the halo encyclopedia upon release. so please listen to me
