My theory is this: When something gets completely overrated, completely overhyped, and all the fans claim it's the best thing since sliced bread, people are going to be more and more willing to share their opinion of how they didn't like it. Before you pin me as a "hater", let me point out that I think it's a good game.
Let me explain... Halo 3 is very overrated. It's a good game, but it can't live up to the hype. The media was calling it the culturalequivilant of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, they compared it to the Odyssey and the Illiad. No game in the history of games can live up to that hype.
Also, it was extremely overrated. It's a good game, but it's not the best game ever made. If you disagree with me, well to each his own, but I'd be willing to bet you haven't been playing video games for very long, or you're just a die-hard fan who eats up everything with Master Chief on the cover. Again, whatever floats your boat.
Lastly, everyone is making it out to be the game to end all games. It's a good game, but the story is mediocre, the single player campaign is pretty shoddy, and Halo was never about the multiplayer. I know, I know...to a whole lot of people, Halo is and always has been the multiplayer, and I agree - that's one of the best parts of Halo. But good multiplayer doesn't justify a poor campaign and a fairly used-feeling storyline. It doesn't culminate into a 9.5.
Because of those reasons, people on the internet will be more inclined to share their feelings about the game. I say live with it and don't let them influence your purchase. Personally, if you're interested in the story of Halo and the single-player/coop content, it's not worth it. If you're interrested in the multiplayer content, go ahead and buy it.
