i'm still on the fence on getting it. it's nice to have the DLC maps from Halo 3, but will the achievements be the same? cause Halo 3 has some ridiculous achievements. and then theres the learning curve. Halo 3 came out what, like almost 3 years ago? i'll get owned and have no fun with it.

From what I understand it has all the same MP achievements from Halo 3.
Not to derail this beyond the OPs questions, but I've been on the fence about these here Halo-an gaems. I borrowed 1 and 2 from a friend some 3 years ago and I enjoyed the story mode (particularly the Arbiter, I know, shocking). I had played a bit of the MP of 1 even further back, and it was ok with some of my friends, but I'm not much of a competitive online gamer. All I play is Team Fortress 2 for the PC. That said, I never bothered to play 3 even though I kind of wanted to see how it ended, there were things in 07, 08, and 09 that I felt took precedent over my attention and I never saw fit to pursue it.
The same rings true for my appreciation of the Gears series. Though my methods were different (I actually got Gears for myself at a $15 reduction) However, I found myself bored after playing the singleplayer (insultingly short I might add) and I had no desire to visit the MP mode. Now, drawing close to the end of 09, I've found myself with an unusual dilemma, despite the fact that I don't fit into the perceived stereotypes of Gears or Halo gamers (ranging from frats, to neckbeards, to irritating 12 year olds), I find myself oddly attracted to the notion of playing either Gears of War 2 (the GotY edition) and ODST.
Gears 2 sounds far more appealing than the original with a larger focus on offline materials such as the standard co-op, the not so standard co-op Horde, and the ability to play with bots (!!!) in an offline MP mode. That all of course coupled with the heaps of praise it received and its new price of $40. ODST also seems to be attracting me despite my passing flirtations with the Halo universe, the videos I have watched tantalize me with its understated jazz soundtrack focused on setting a mood firmly implanted in a film-noir story. Said story has also piqued my interest with its aforementioned noir stylings and seemingly superb voice cast. The inclusion of a Horde-esque mode helps it against the same feature found in Gears.
I'm quite aware of the offline fun to be had in MP Halo, but I'm wary of what attachment I'll have to the previously released Halo 3 MP featured on the second disc, as its really not meant for one such as me. I understand its apples to oranges here, but for someone who has never owned a Halo (more to the point is kind of a grumpy PC FPS guy), would ODST be a sound choice? Would Gears 2 be an equally viable one? Or have I just wasted everyone's time with this drag-ass post? Any response would be appreciated.
Edited so thats its not a wall of text.

Gears 2 online--well, you should know that it takes a long time to get into a match, and once you die there is no respawn so you have to depend on people to revive you. On the other hand, Gears 2 is more tactical. A lot more people will be playing ODST for sure. I already have Gears 2 so I would go with ODST.i'm still on the fence on getting it. it's nice to have the DLC maps from Halo 3, but will the achievements be the same? cause Halo 3 has some ridiculous achievements. and then theres the learning curve. From what I understand Gears 2 has it 5-player, ODST's Firefight is 4 player. You and your team stave off wave after wave of enemies for points, Gears has dozens of levels and the enemies grow more numerous and stronger as each level advances. I would assume ODST's works in a similar manner, but with a Halo flavor.[QUOTE="Ovirew"][QUOTE="bronxxbombers"] And a horde mode.jmangafanOkay I hate to sound like a total noob, but what is Horde mode? i think i'm gonna get this game just for the firefight mode. story mode looks good, but i've never been a fan of Halo's multiplayer

You fight the Covenant, not the Flood.

Indeed, a Halo flavor.
I think you should expect ODST to have a MUCH more difficult 'Horde' mode. While GoW2 isn't a walk in a field of pretty flowers, ODST's Firefight is ment to be extremely frantic and, well, insanely difficult.
5 waves = Round.
3 rounds = Set.
After each Round, a number of Brute Chieftans come after you. (Increases number the farther you are until a cap. At the cap, they start gaining more health
After each Set is a Bonus round, a point limit is chosen, when the ODST reach that point limit, every 1000 points after it rewards an extra respawn, this round allows you to build up to survive longer. This round consists only of grunts who throw plasma grenades. Skull multipliers switch on and off frantically throughout the round. The round ends when the grunts are all dead or a player dies.
Skull multipliers are randomly switched on and off, except for a few, which appear to be geared as punishments for players who are too campy or weapon hogging. (For instance, a player using only a sniper for a very long time, however scoring few kills, might trigger the blind skull)
Basically, Bungie took the GoW2 horde mode and said "Lets make this as brutal as OUR game can let us."
Rumor says at wave 77, you fight a group of Elites wielding Energy swords. Active Camo and all. I dunno bout you guys, but I would think that would be awesome.

Wow, so my original long winded response was gobbled up by gamespot and spat into a black hole... So I'll keep this short. If you don't intend to even play co-op on either game I personally wouldn't think either is worth paying even thirty bucks for. Horde and Fire fight wouldn't be very fun by yourself. Personally I find fighting bots in Gears 2 matches by myself to be pretty boring. And campaigns are always more fun in co-op. The whole reason I still play the Halo 3 campaign every now and then now a day is because of co-op.
Its a new game so i think it has new achivementsi'm still on the fence on getting it. it's nice to have the DLC maps from Halo 3, but will the achievements be the same? cause Halo 3 has some ridiculous achievements. and then theres the learning curve. Its the competitive online stuff I'd be avoiding. I've got a friend that I more or less live with who'd be there the whole time and he's got a good amount of Halo under his belt.vashkey

It has a few new achieveables, but it does NOT feature any new multiplayer achievements. It shares Matchmaking achievements with Halo 3.
The ODST disc however has different achievements all concerning and surrounding the Campaign and Firefight modes.
It has newachievementsin the main game but cant say for the on-linebecausei dont want to play it online before the release. From what i already played thus far it has a very nice story, the fights are not to long but epic, you play as 2 different people for about 2-3 hours then you join forces and the rest of the game kick ass. The addition of the pistol is great, easy to get head-shots with that one. I think i still have half way to go before i finish, It is not a new HALO3 but it does build on the greatness of itspredecessor.Definitelyworth a play.
