so i purchased a new 120GB hard drive so i could download games on to it. it worked exactly long enough for me to transfer everything i had on to it and clear out my 20 gig drive and download one game on to the hard drive. when i went to install the next one the screen suddenly went blank and then to a screen showing an E68 error.
now all it does is show this error and click. i read a couple of places that it was making noise because a door in the HD was not switching open. does anyone know anything i could try, or is this a lost cause? i just lost hundreds of hours of gameplay.
microsoft confirmed that they can't do anything about it
I think you're out of luck with you game saves, but as for the hardware malfunction just return it and give Microsoft a call to see if they can reimburse you somehow on your lost save files. I'd be seriously pissed if that happened with something that I just bought out of retail.
The exact same thing just happened to me. FYI, it takes some convincing to get them to admit it is the hard drive. Despite the fact that I could recover my gamer tag on the now empty 20GB drive the rep required me to wait until tomorrow to verify that it's the old drive still works and the new one is E 68 lower red light producing garbage. I sent a message to all my friends on Live to buy a memory card and move those saves over before attempting an HD upgrade. The legalese does a good CYA job for Microsoft, so the risk is all ours. I'd bought the drive a while ago, waiting until I had holiday time to deal with the transfer, but luckily I have time before the 90 day window hits. If I have trouble w/the exchange, I'll post a follow-up here. I think, though, I'm basically out only a few key game saves (hundreds of hours on two set-aside games). Bummer for one, as I'd intended to use some after Xmas time to get into Oblivion again and finish it off. I'm certainly out the game saves, but hopefully not out any money.
