Recently I loaded up GTA4 again, and upon loading, my xbox froze up, leaving the last image broken up and covered in white spots. After restarting my xbox, the screen just remained black, and then on the second restart, my xbox gave me the red ring of death. However, upon removing the hard drive my xbox still works, so is this just hard drive failure or something more? All the other hard drive failures I read about were a lot more obvious, and didn't read anything like this.

it seems a HDD failure if your xbox start without it. What is your model? the new slim one or the old one ? and how many red lights is showing?

Like the guy above posted, there are several issues that could cause this. This would warrent more information pertaining on what is going on with your system. If really doesn't sound like a HDD issue in my opinion, but after getting a PROD and removing your HDD, then your Xbox starts up fine. More in likely the issue is in your HDD. Buy a new one.

The easiest way to find out is to put ur HD on another 360 and see if it still causes a problem.
