i disagree, i was on there playing Rainbow Six, and Crimson Skies, and the community was great, occassionally i met some bad players but mostly it was fun. After Halo 2 *dont get me wrong i love that game* But live was changed as the masses of little kids attacked us, causing our Ears to bleed with their annoying high pitched voices, then we had the players who simply ruined the game by cheating/modding. Regardless i still love Live.
I've been on since launch, and the biggest difference is that there weren't a ton of jerks on it back in the beginning. It was like everyone was new to it, and really cool with eachother. You could even ask a question about the game if you didn't know and someone would answer you without telling you about your momma too!
It was a little laggier here and there, but it wasn't too bad.Â
I didn't pick it up until February 2003 since I was too busy with other things at the time. However, people who think things didn't get rolling until Halo 2 must not have played much beforehand.
Both Unreal Championship and MechAssault were a blast. Later we got Crimson Skies and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. We also saw the slow evolution of Dashboard features which hinted that Microsoft had a grand plan. The big failure? Not requiring all games to be Xbox Live Aware. Microsoft was one of the biggest failures in this area as third-party titles added it yet even titles with downloads (like Brute Force) weren't aware. All the way until the end they maintained this, with one of the last titles, Blinx 2, lacking Aware and, oddly, Live multiplayer depite extensive multiplayer options.
For me the breakthrough on Live was Star Wars Battlefront a couple of months before Halo 2. Here the vision on Live finally exploded with 24-player battles (plus bots) and a game that really relied on teamwork. This was the game that maxxed out my first Friends list and kept me hosting servers 24/7.

No kidding. Halo helped and hurt Live. I was playing the original Mechassault, and people never talked to eachother the way they do on Halo. Oh well.[QUOTE="KniferHitandRun"][QUOTE="zero9167"]I started live around launch. Back when rainbow six 3 came outxfactor19990

yea xbl was much better before halo2. with RBS3, mech assualt, crimson skies, and splinter cell pandora tomorrowI beta tested live before it went live. The beta was with NFL Fever...it sucked bad, its amazing how far it has come since then.
I also have been on xbox live since beta testing started. For that time, it was good. I loved NFL Fever playing against people all over the country. The free Beta tester tshirts, cd case, free games and all the other goodies were a good part of beta.  Live has improved quite a lot, mostly I see that the lag is no where near as bad as it was when it launched.
