it looks like you definitely went for gamerscore at one point, with 30+k.
I go through phases with it as well. I raced a friend to 10k, then continued for a bit after that, borrowing some games purely for the GS, but now I'd much rather play a good game that I enjoy playing, rather than one just for GS. GS is pointless, but I do still like completing a game fully before moving on. I find they do tend to make me play a game longer than I might otherwise have done, so in that respect I think they are good, as long as I am enjoying the extra time I'm playing.
there ok. some of them are a bit stupid, like on gta, having to do a wheelie for a certain distance (fun, but pointless)
and other games, like eternal sonata and bioshock, ive completed multiple times, but because i wasnt looking to do certain things i only achived a fifth of the total achievements
I couldn't care less for Achievement Points either, but to really hate it might be too much for me. However, I do hate one of my neighbor's cat. It keeps giving me the evil-eye everytime I come home from school.
I dig 'em. They add plenty of replay value. Without boosting or cheating, also.
They give you a sense of accomplishment for SURE. Gears of War's "Seriously..." and COD4's "Mile High Club", especially.

Wow you really do like 360 :P
Anyhow. I've made my feelings perfectly clear on this many many times before. I love them, in fact, i'm happy to admit my love for them is approaching dangerous addiction. But that's fine, noone else has to like them.
I just like the ability to say to someone "Well, here's the achievement for X" if they don't beleive I have achieved a certain thing. For example nothing irked me more than way back when, when I beat the world record speed for Resident Evil 2: Leon Scenario A, of course nobody beleives me, I wouldnt beleive me either without photo evidence. Unfortunately you only get like 3 seconds to photo the screen to catch the time, and none of the photos came out well enough to see.
But achievements give me a way of saying "Well, here it is." without getting into an argument about whether or not i'm lying through my teeth.
The other side of achievements however, the numeric score. Is I think what causes the most heated debate. This is where it's not longer about what you have achieved, but a pointless number which you either, hate. And hate anyone with a high score either through repressed jealousy, or because you geniunely dont beleive it's an acceptable pursuit. Love, and by extension strive to heighten your score. Or could care less about it, and just play like you normally would on any other console.
Personally I feel the number, while impressive at 25k+ (mines 22 atm) is meaningless. If you really want an indication of how good/what type of gamer that person is, you must actually look at the acheivements he has gained.
It's kind of like review scores. People spend too much time going "ZOMG OVER 9000!!!!!!!" and not enough time going "Oh, this guy actually has a point/Has actually gotten Mile High Club"
I dont realy care about them. I used to compete with a friend but he gave up on me:P that was my only reason to go for achievements
I like them and despise them at the same time. Some games were ruined for me because of achievements (Gears was one of them). Not because I was hell bent on getting them, but because others were. Nothing sucked more than having some idiot on your team run stright for the boomshot leaving the rest of his team behind with no help just because he wanted to get 100 kills with it, or having someone run around using only the pistol while his team gets slaughtered. This was the main reason I stopped playing that game online. Thankfully developers have begun to learn from the mistakes others have made and these types of problems are going away.
I do love when I hear that ding while playing a game though, it really gives you a sense of satisfaction when you do something insanely difficult and also gives others a good idea of how good you are (or aren't) at a game.
So I guess as long as they enhance my enjoyment rather than hinder it I'm all for them.
I'm in limbo with them. Personally I think you should be able to spend them on XBLA. I don't want the big number for bragging rights, it should just track what you've accomplished.
I like unlocking achievements, but I wont go out of my way. Normally I just get the ones for game completion. 20 points isn't worth putting 2 more hours into a game I'm ready to be done with.
I liked the idea but in many games (GTA4 now) I rush the game and do stuff that I dont like to do just for the score. Beat it under 30 hours, check. Collect 30 cars so you can finally give attention to other stuff, check. Waste hours trying to roll your car 5 times, check. Etc etc. Some games have great achievements that you can get in your own time, with those games I really love the idea. Biggest problem is that the balance is off, some games give you 900 points for just the basic stuff, ohers only 200.
I too have grown to dislike achievements, next gen Microsoft needs to make more guidelines for developers when it comes to achievements.
or having someone run around using only the pistol while his team gets slaughtered.

I do agree with your point as a whole, but I feel the need to point out that the Pistol is among the best weapons in Gears of War. It's sheer versatility at all ranges makes it disputable as to whether or not it's THE best weapon.
[QUOTE="Deihmos"]some people have the need to hate anything popular to feel coolHow can you possibly say you hate achievements? I can understand you not caring for them but hating them is very strange.

but i really like it when a game has a fun set of achievements
Rofl, Warm Coffee.

Point taken, maybe not the best example to use. :)
