My sister recently bought an Xbox 360 and I'm trying to invite her to a party or game and each time I do it won't let her and says that there may be network difficulties. Now, I was just at my dad's house (where she lives) the other day using my gamertag and harddrive and was having the same problem. I was trying to join up with a friend that I normally game with and it wouldn't work. We assumed that it was a problem with the router, tried changing a few settings but nothing worked, it still wouldn't let me join my friend's party. Then after about another 10 mins we tried it again and it suddenly worked, we played Left 4 Dead for several hours that night and again the next day with no problems.

Now I'm back at my apartment and am trying to invite my sister into a party and it's not working. Keep in mind that none of the settings on my dad's router were ever changed. I'm beginning to think it may be some kind of problem with Live itself, however there are typically threads on this website when that happens.

Anyway, if anyone has any answers/suggestions to this problem, your input will be greatly appreciated. I'm not an expert with routers or networking but I've tried everything I can think of with no luck.

No, this isn't a problem with Live. This is strictly a home networking issue (router). There are all kinds of settings that can cause Live, or things like joining parties not work. It's possible that at the time it worked, a PC wasn't using an I.P., and now it is...etc. Without seeing all your settings, there's no way to know for sure. My brother had the exact same issue, until I went over to my parents' (he's only 17, so he lives at home) and I opened ports 88 and 3074 (Xbox Live's ports) and assigned them to his 360's I.P., which I also made a static I.P. He hasn't had a single problem since. Odds are it's something else connected to your router using up the port or I.P. Conflicting I.P addresses cause all kinds of issues.

I'd try two things: 1) If not already, make sure it's a "wired" connection. Meaning, not WiFi. WiFi worked for me fine, but I did get some random errors with it. 2) Check your router's settings. On my AT&T router, I enabled all programs on my Xbox 360's connections. It's most likely not Xbox Live that's the problem. Play around with your router's settings is my best advice.

Yeah, worst case scenario. Just DMZ your 360's I.P. address. What that'll do, in case you don't know, is it'll allow any ports your 360 requests to be forwarded to it. In theory, this is bad to do, since you're allowing everything and anything in. But it won't harm your 360. Nobody is gonna hack into your 360. Don't even think it's possible...

this may not be of any use to you... but if you happen to have something else plugged in your 360, such as a Guitar Hero guitar... unplug it. I know it doesn't sound like it would be the cause of the problem, but for whatever reason it actually was for me.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I tried changing some of the settings on my own router last night. However, I don't think it's a problem with mine because I've gamed online with several friends and have never run into a problem. I also had my dad on the phone for over an hour changing some of the settings on his, but nothing worked. I hate technology sometimes . I like things to be simple haha.

imperial_agent: No, nothing is plugged into either 360 except for the power cord, TV cables, and ethernet cable.

Dredg11: I'm going to send you a PM with a couple more questions, if that's okay.
