Hey. What's up people? First of all as you all will notice. This is my first post here. I'm not really into these introduction things I like to get right to the point. I'm gonna try and make a long story short cause its kinda hard to explain this problem and everything I've been through to try and fix it. First I need to state I've been a hardcore gamer since the days of the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo so I really know a thing or two about video games and I've never seen anything like this. So here goes. First things first. I got my first Xbox 360 back in Summer of 2006. It went strong for 2 years with no problems. June 2008 I got the red ring and had it shipped off to be fixed. I got it back in about 2 weeks. After that. No problems until just after Christmas. I noticed these mysterious white lines started popping up in the graphics. It first happened on Oblivion (Which I love by the way) So I tryed other games to see how they reacted. I popped in The Godfather and sure enough there were white lines there as well. So now I'm thinking. Okay. My system is broke again and I need it fixed. So I called Microsoft and they tried to screw me over for $100. I refused to pay $100 to have a system (That I thought was broke again) fixed just to have it break again later on. So I went and bought an Elite (Which now we're up to February 2009) And the problem continued. So then I thought. I need a new tv. Well between the time I got a new tv I ended finally getting connected to Xbox live. I got all the updates for all my games and the problem still continued. And so I waited until I was able to get a new tv (Which now its May 2009) So I get a new 26' flat screen HD Tv. Very nice picture and stuff and guess what. I still haven't fixed the problem. And recently I've spotted these white lines in Left 4 Dead. So I tried hooking the system up a different way. I tried my HDMI cable. Still nothing changed. I contacted Microsoft yesterday and they were no help what so every. No one seems to even understand what I'm talking about but these white lines are driving me nuts. I can't enjoy the games I once loved because of the screwed up graphics. Its so annoying. I don't notice it in all my games. My Guitar Hero and Rock Band games seem to be just fine. I have a few hunting games that look fine and Sonic The Hedhehog looks fine. So really I don't know what the deal is. And to go into alittle bit more detail. The white lines appear in walls, floors, the ground, water, celilings, and even other characters. So has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone even know what I'm talking about? Can anybody help me solve this problem? If you've read the whole message then thanks for your time. I would be highly greatful for any help.

Nice wall o' text there ;)

Maybe, just maybe it could be interference from something on the same frequency/wavelength as your tv.

For example, sounds stupid but my friend's tv went all crazy with white lines when the FRIDGE opened (wierd or what?).

Now I cannot guarantee thats the problem but what I strongly recommend doing is taking your 360 (or your old one if its still working at all) and testing it on a friends screen and/or your games on their Xbox. This will confirm whether it is your console.

At first it sounded like you have an overheated graphics chip, or damaged at least. Just to be safe, keep your 360 well ventilated with plenty of room behind and to the sides of it.

If you try the taking your xbox round your friends thing etc. you should find out if the xbox it self or your games are broken. If they work fine at his/her house, then you must have some kind of interference or something plugged into the TV also that does not agree with you xbox.

Also, if you are connecting by composite OR HDMI or whatever, make sure you are connecting DIRECTLY to the TV from the 360, just incase you are going through a DVD player, that could be causing interference.

Sorry if it doesn't work, but that is what I would do.

Thanks for the reply. I'm gonna reply with my own answers by reposting yours (Yeah sounds confusing but you'll see. ha ha) (Maybe, just maybe it could be interference from something on the same frequency/wavelength as your tv.) I know what your saying. I don't think its possible because the white lines just randomly popped up one day. Shortly after Christmas 2008. (Testing the games and system at a friends house) Its worth a try. Its one thing I've thought of doing but haven't had the chance yet. As I said. I thought it was my tv and my old system. (Which the white lines still appear on the Elite but they first appeared on my old system. Which is still just fine) (At first it sounded like you have an overheated graphics chip, or damaged at least. Just to be safe, keep your 360 well ventilated with plenty of room behind and to the sides of it.) Yes. When I play my 360. I always stand it up so that way pretty much the whole system is exposed from the sides and back. And it sets out in the open. (Find out if games or system is broken) I'm starting to believe that it is the games because like I said. Bought a new system. New tv. Same problem. And also. Guitar Hero and Rock Band looks great. Along with Halo 3. No problems with those games. (Also, if you are connecting by composite OR HDMI or whatever, make sure you are connecting DIRECTLY to the TV from the 360, just incase you are going through a DVD player, that could be causing interference.) Yes. When I connected with the HDMI cable I connected directly from the 360 to the tv but I have gone back to the AV cable. I've gotten a crazy idea that may be the problem. I'm not sure. I've been trying to think of what changed in my room between the time that I had sharp graphics and the time the mysterious white lines showed up. Your "Perhaps theres something causing interference" comment made me think. I've got one last thing to try. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Do these lines stick around, as in, are they actually white lines or is the picture tearing. There have been a few issues with games tearing at certain resolutions, I can't think of anything else that would create this over your two systems, so I'd try a different resolution with a game that's particularly bad.

I played Oblivion alot last year with no problems and these white lines are so noticeable that I would have spotted them when I first got the game if they were there the whole time. I'll try and paint a picture for you. See when you first start Oblivion. Your character is in prison and you go through this cave that's under the prison in order to escape. In this cave. You can see white lines appear in the celiling in one room. I mean everywhere. All over the celiling. You stand still and they stay in the same spot. You move around and the lines kinda look like they jump around. My Oblivion is unplayable because of this. The Godfather isn't as bad but I'd like to know why these lines just randomly popped up. And as I said. Its not like this in every game I have. Just The Godfather and Oblivion. I think perhaps these 2 games might have been damaged. Last year they were stored close to an air vent. I mean really close and I know your not supposed to store games in hot places. (Which these games stayed in the same spot from September until January and it was right after Christmas I started to notice the lines and come to think of it. The Godfather and Oblivion was at the bottom of the pile so they would have gotten the most heat from the air vent. And for the record it wasn't my idea to store them there.) I'm not trying to sound stupid or anything cause I've been told that couldn't have damaged them but that came from people who know nothing about video games. I need some input here cause I'm starting to think there damaged and I'd like to get these 2 games back. So I'm thinking I may need to buy them both again. Left 4 Dead is not my problem. That's my cousin's game and I don't have a clue where he keeps his games stored.

Why would you not always use the HDMI? Why use the composite/component?

Sounds like these white lines may be in your eyeballs, you should see an eye doctor.

Rent a copy of The Godfather or Oblivion, or whatever other games are doing it and see ifthere isany difference. Although I highly doubt it as if the disk the game is on is damaged then surely it would not play at all, or if it did it would freeze completley at the parts where the disk is damaged. Go back to HDMI and set the resolution to the native resolution of the TV, most likely 720p but depends what TV you got. Try clearing the consoles cache by following the method on this webpage :- http://www.wikihow.com/Delete-the-Cache-on-Your-Xbox-360 This will unfortunately delete any game updates you have but they will automatically reinstall next time you start the game as you are now connected to live. Buy a DVD lense disk cleaner. They are cheap and work great. They have micro fibre bristles that actually clean the lense really well. Cant think of anything else right now other than it being a faulty graphics chip in the console but as it only happens on a few games it probably isn't that. Good luck

Yeah you'd think the game would be unplayable if it was damaged. My 360 is set to all the correct settings. So its really strange how these white lines just popped up one day. My cousin (Not the one I borrowed Left 4 Dead from) has both Oblivion and The Godfather and his graphics don't look like it does on mine. Its just strange and like I said its driving me crazy. Ha ha. I've never seen anything like it. I just want those 2 games back without the graphic problems cause those are my 2 favorite 360 games. But yeah. Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll figure it out soon. Peace.

So have you tried his 2copies of those games on yours? If so and they work then there is a simple solution. If not then try them and see if it still happens. If it does still happen then you've ruled out the disks being damaged Have you tried installing the games to the HDD? Could make a difference especially with Oblivion
