Best Buy has dropped the price of the HD-DVD add-on more than the actual MS price drop (MSRP $180). They have it at $150 as of this morning with the 6 free movies (King Kong + mail in form) and the free remote. This is a STEAL any way you put it. The device works fantastically and with over $120 worth of free movies and a $30 remote, it really seems like a no brainer to me.

This also effectively puts the 360+HDDVD combo at $500, the same as the PS3+BluRay, except that the 360 combo also comes with a remote ($30 for PS3) and HD cables ($30 for PS3).

EDIT:

How about an additional 10% off? http://forums.slickdeals.net/showpost.php?p=7440889&postcount=13

And here's the 5 movie mail-in form: http://ak.buy.com/buy_assets/retail/pdfs/07Q3/0801-0930jw_5hddvd_microsoft.pdf

**Please don't turn this into a format war thread. That's not the point of this threadand I get tired of correcting all the Bluboys' slander.

You can get it at the store. I would assume you could also do the in-store pickup thing online if you wanted to guarantee that there was one there when you showed up.

If you want my suggestions on movies (as someone who has had this drive for a while and enjoys it with a Netflix sub), category A I would grab Chronicles of Riddick; its picture quality is FANTASTIC and I think it is a fairly underrated movie as well. In category B, Casablanca no question. The movie is amazing and is really the only classic that has ever made me understand the image Hollywood had in that era. There is no doubt in my mind that it also throws down the gauntlet with a perfect HD remaster as well. You will be STUNNED that this movie was filmed over 60 years ago and looks as fantastic as it does. Apollo 13 is the only other one in there that might compete, but I've heard it's merely an ok transfer... good, but not great.

**EDIT: Wow, already sold out online and this deal went up this morning. Guess it's head to the store only.... or try to get a price match somewhere.

I bought the thing retail with 4 movies for 284 dollars.

If anyone who doesn't have it does not jump on this deal then they have problems.

I told you no format war stuff because all you guys do is give incorrect information.

BluRay has 290 titles available right now, HD-DVD has 283 (BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!) and HD-DVD's movies are, in general, a better selection (as far as the quality of the story, etc.... video quality is identical). As far as sales, it is about 40/60 right now, but considering that HD movies in general only account for approx 1% of DVD sales, we're talking a difference of about 10,000 units.

HD-DVD has the lead in standalone players. Of the BluRay players in the USA, >90% of the are PS3s and less than 25% of thoseare used to play BluRay movies. Here's the kicker, all those BluRay players may be left in the cold in October when Sony finally decides to set down their format's features.

So again, no format war junk..... if you want that, I took care of all of it in this thread (I've got far more positives if you need them ;)): http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25805974

I do not see this offer on Bestbuy.com. It also show that the HD-DVD add on is sold old. Maybe I'm too late.

Does that coupon work for the HD DVD player...I didn't think it was in one of the categories listed. BB just raised the price to 179.99 but if that coupon works, I might pick it up.

I just found out that Toshiba scratches the seal on the 5 free HD DVDs that they give you, so that they are unable to be returned to the store...this kinda put me off, but I may still pick up the player

I just went to my local store in South Florida and bought it for 149.99 They said they already sold 5 today. Mine also had the King Kong movie inside.

My question is, do you think we void the 5 free HD-DVD movie offer by buying it for 149.99? The offer's pdf says to clearly circle the purchase date and price. Obviously the date matters but why would the price matter unless they only want you to buy it for 179.99?

I just bought a player at Circuit City for 161.00 plus tax for a grand total of 174.00. It was the last one in stock so I think that they're selling pretty well with the price drop.

Netflix rents them out. I use it all the time.

Some Blockbuster Videos carry HD DVDs for rent as well. The one up the street from my house still does.

Considering that new HD-DVDs cost 30 a piece, this basicly means that you buy 5 movies and get the HD-DVD player for free. It's too bad HD-DVDs have all but lost the format war what with blockbuster and netflix going bluray only

That is a good deal. My only problem is HD-DVD is getting outsold by bluray 2-1. I dont want to be stuck with a player and 6 movies a year from now and no other movies to buy because of the discontinued product. Would rather just a buy a Ps3 for blu-ray and its bigger selection and with blockbuster on board its hard to go wrong for me. Oh! Playing MGS4 would be exciting as well. :)

This is the kind of stuff I keep having to deal with because Sony's lie factory (think PS2 being Toy Story-like) is in full swing. HD-DVD has BY FAR more standalone players sold. BluRay to HD-DVD sales are not 2:1, but 60-40 and HD-DVD keeps gaining ground. Netflix is my biggest source of HD-DVD movies, trustme when I say they are far from being BluRay only.... and Blockbuster is only BluRay only in its stores, online they have both. I already commented on HD-DVD having 283 and BluRay having 290 titles available with HD-DVD actually tending to have the better exclusives (although I will admit BluRay has some nice ones as well). **Sigh** Please stop spreading the lies that Sony puts out. The format war is FAR from over.... especially with HD-DVD now at the sub-$200 level, the level the Walmart says they become interested while BluRay is still $500. Considering combined they only account for 1% of all home videos sales, there is still a LONG way to go before either can claim any victory.
