Finally got my tax return and was wondering if I should purchase the HD-DVD add-on. Anyone have it or have any thoughts on it? With the HD war still being undecided, is it worth it for the current titles it has and does it upconvert better than the 360 itself?.

Yeah it does upconvert a little better. Any investment on a new format can be risky and the war isn't going so well for HD-DVD, MS heart really isn't in it. Sony is strong in the movie business and when you see big Sony titles not going HD-DVD and your stuck with DVD version, it stinks. If HD-dvds were selling better or the user base was bigger most big movies would probly go both HD-DVD and Blue-ray, but sadly it's not. Go check out an online rental service and compare which titles HD-dvd is lacking before you take the jump.

Thanks for the response. I'm overly anxious to take advantage of my tv's capabilities even though I know the smart thing to do is wait it out. Especially since MS said a Blu-Ray add-on may be possible. Guess I'll just pick up some more games in the meantime.

The jump from VHS to DVD was huge. The jump from DVD to HD/BluRay is not that much. I'm more interested in these formats for storage than for watching movies. I'm enjoying dvd's just fine. And remember, there are several different formats of DVD's Dvd-R, DVD+R, DVD ROM, DVD-RW, single layer, dual layer. but current DVD players will play all the formats. They use the same lazer diode to read HD and BluRay so I thnk in the future there will be players that play BluRay AND HD. That's what I'm waiting for.

And what about Holographic Versatile Disk (HVD) They're going to be able to hold 3.9 terabytes!! So don't be suprised if that format leapfrogs HD/bluray like DVD did to Laserdisc.

I like the HD-DVD very much but I can't seem to find that many movies to go along with it.

i would wait till players that play both blueray / hd, become afforadable. But I have noticed many HD dvd's also have regular DVD version on there. While the blueray does not...

Umm... maybe don't buy the HD-DVD player. Blu-Ray is winning the war. Blu-Ray has been selling at a rate of 3 Blu-Ray for every 1 HD-DVD sold.

Sony's ploy of using a game system to sell their media device is working. PlayStation 3 users must be bored of having no good games other than Resistance, so their buying movies.

The 360 upconverts without the HD-DVD player. You have to use the VGA cable though. You have to use the VGA cable to upconvert even with the HD-DVD drive. Upconverting looks no different if you have the HD-DVD drive because it just uses the scaling chip built into every Xbox 360. I have the HD-DVD drive, but kind think Blu-ray will come out in the end. I also have a PS3, so I'm covered either way. :)
