Sorry to bother you all once again with my threads. But this time i'm the one who needs help. So i just picked up my brand new Xbox 360 S yesterday and i set it up all last night on my HDTV. But i chose to play it on standard cables for the time being (not HD). The graphics weren't as smooth as i knew they could be, but i didn't mind for that time being. I was going to head out the next morning and buy a new HDMI cable from my local store, but i remembered i had an old one laying around.

So i hooked this one up to my 360 slim, and changed my input settings on my TV to HDMI 1, (the certain slot which i plugged in the HDMI cable from my Xbox 360). And my TV picked this up and put me through to HD. Now i didn't know if it was running 1080p like my LG HDTV supports, but it still looked crystal clear and smooth. As always i wanted to fiddle around and make sure it was 1080p or at least check what it was running.

So when i went to the settings through the Xbox 360 i didn't quite know how to check what it was running, so i took matters into my own hand and just chose the '1080p' option, and my TV flashed black than went back to it's previous picture quality. So than i wanted to try 720p and see how that was, but instead of the picture returning, my TV screen remained black and a icon flashed up saying ' Invalid Format' (or something down those lines).

But on the other hand the normal AV cables still worked on the TV. So now i tried fixing the HDMI problem, and to my surprise the normal cables when connected to the TV do not work either, there is only sound and no picture. (so now the HDMI doesn't work or the normal AV cables when connected)

I'd also like to add that i tried everything humanly possible, i took out every plug and re-plugged them back in. I reset the settings via the controller on the xbox 360, i fiddled around with the TV settings and nothing wants to work. At this point i've almost had enough and i'm so upset. I really need all your help, thanks in advance.

ive done that before, what i did was learned how to get to the display menu without seeing a picture...and changed it blind. theres sites online that will tell you how to do it.

you cant just mess around with resolutions cuz eventually you will put it on one thats not compatible and your fubard.

if your using hdmi just find one that works and keep it.

Thanks for replying so soon, and i'm happy to say that i just re-plugged the normal AV cables back into the Xbox 360 and the TV, and now that is working. But my concern is the HDMI problem now, and being able to play HD gaming, is there a way to fix this? I really want to play my Xbox 360 in HD. I'm hoping that maybe after i give it some time, and re-plug the HDMI back in again, it might just give me another chance and it will work (like my av cable). Does anyone know what i could do, (and mind you with the HDMI plug connected, there is no sound or picture. It just comes up as 'Invalid Format'), thanks once again.

Are you changing from regular to HD before plugging in HDMI? Make sure you leave it on standard before plugging in HDMI.

Is the HDMI cable and the AV plugged in at the same time? I found you have to unplug the HDMI to get the AV to work. With both it defaults to the HDMI and only sound comes through the AV. I had mine hooked to a monitor with the HDMI and my CRT tv with the AV Component.

Could be a bad HDMI cable ? I don't know really what to tell you though admittedly I am no expert here either.

theres a way to get the 360 to reset its video settings with the controller. When you tun the 360 on hold down the right trigger an y. This resets the video settings and might help you out.

I know i'll work this out sooner or later, but thank you all for your help and comments. Guess i'll be playing Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2 and Gears Of War on Standard Definition for a while until i work things out :P

Yeah i already tried this bro, but i did it when i was connected with the normal AV cables. Do you think i should do it when im connected to the HDMI cable and when the screen is just black?

I've come to a conclusion. It must be the HDMI cable. I've also had problems with this exact same cable with my *other* console. It would never show a picture no matter what i did, and it was never resolved. I wanted to try my luck with this cable for the 360, and i was honestly hoping it wouldn't be the cable, but it has to be. So i chucked it out in the bin, and i'll be picking up a new one tomorrow and asking a lot of questions with it.

If i may also ask, and sorry for all the trouble, does it have to be a HDMI cable? i know there's another cable out there, one thats like the AV cables, with 6 banana plugs or something, but only HD. Are they any good? Do they support 1080p by any chance, and i've heard their a lot easier to use. Thanks =]

well there is VGA but you would have to check to make sure your TV has it. Its the same plug PCs use.

Component/AV-6 plugs can do 1080P but both HDMI and VGA deliver better quality picture.

I would suggest HDMI. Its easier to use and you can buy for real cheap on the internet unlike in the stores. Mines was only $5 buks and all HDMI cords are built equal for the most part.

I'm extremely thrilled to say, that i have just came back from EB GAMES, and i bought a $20 HDMI cable, which was originally $40. So i plugged this one into my Xbox 360 slim, and it put me through to HD :D. It works perfectly, but i have one small question again haha. Because i'm too scared to fiddle through the settings, as it may stuff up on me, is it on 1080p?. (As soon as i connected the HDMI cable from my Xbox 360 to my TV, i changed the input to 'HDMI 1' again, and it put me through to my Xbox 360 menu). The picture is crystal clear, and i played some Alan Wake on it, and it looked amazing. So im guessing it chose the best setting for my TV. So happy haha :D

well i dont know your tv and but the 360 i believe has a countdown feature built in so that when you change the resolution you have to confirm as well. If you dont confirm within like 15 secs it will revert back to the last setting so it should be safe for you to go see how high you can set it. Even if you manage to get into the same situation you were in before you cant always still use the controller reset to get it back to the way it was.

It might already be 1080P just go look in the settings.

oh and your welcome:)

Ok, after gaming for 2 hours, the picture has not changed back to it's original format. So that cancels out the 15 second rule thingy. (because i never changed the format, as soon as i plugged in the HDMI cable, the xbox 360 set it itself).

Now i went to check what i was running, and under 'display' settings it says: 1360 x 768, HDMI. ( i have a full HD 1080p TV), and i heard this format is '720p', is this normal? I heard from someone online, that some TV's say full HD but when plugged in with HDMI they down scale the resolution to play better. Sorry once again, but could you please answer this? =]
