I was wondering if I bought an hdmi cable if i could still use the red and white sound cables for sound instead of having the sound play out of my tv through hdmi. I ask because i have a surround sound system that accepts only those cables and i wouldnt get hdmi if I wounldnt be able to use the system.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a digital optical audio port on your suround sound reciever? If so then try this type of cables...

LINK

I don't know if it will work in your situation, but on my VGA connector on my 360, there is a port for this type of cable... I don't know how it works with the HDMI connector because I don't have one... so check first...

As the last poster said - optical is better if your receiver supports - but to answer your question...

Yes you can run your RCA's at the same time as HDMI. What will happen is that you will still get sound through your TV via HDMI and you will also get sound to your receiver via RCA. If you want no sound through the TV - you will have to actually mute the TV to get rid of the audio coming from the HDMI cable.
