give it plenty of space, and don't keep it on a carpet, blow it out regularly with compressed air while it is shut off and no game are inside, keep it away from other heat producing electronics.
Good airflow Give it plenty of space and don't put it in an enclosed space like an entertainment centre. The 360 produces a lot of heat and needs to get rid of it. If you put it in an enclosed space the air inside will just get hotter and hotter until it cooks itself. Don't block the ventilation holes. Might seem obvious, but if you stand it vertically on carpet you are blocking the largest vent in the console. I have mine horizontal and place a couple of pieces of wood under it to raise it slightly, so air can get all around the case and in through all the ventilation holes
You also may want to get a small fan, to keep either the powerbrick or your actual XboX cool. Try using a vacuum when you are blowing out the dust w/ compressed air. Dont have unneeded things plugged into the USB's (Your charger for the controller, wireless adapter, ipod). Take a break after 2-3 hours of continuous play (shut it down). Also *do some research* about intercoolers (fans that plug into your 360 to keep it cooler/better vented).
