Okay I had a topic up in the system wars to help me pick a new console of the big 3. I've chosen the 360. Now I'd like your help to try to get me started. My first question is will this work with my Lynksys router? Its really not as much fun without online play. Also, what are my payment options for xbox live? eg: monthly, yearly, or every six months. Thank you all in advance.

To play wirelessly you need th M$ wireless adapter. As for payment options I think it's monthly, 3 months or a year. A year is $50 its the best deal.

your router will work, but you need to get a microsoft wireless adapter, look on ebay and you can get a brand new one for about $60. as for payment options, you can get a 1 month, 3 month, or 12 month. the 12 months is the best value at $50.

yes, it will work fine. Linksys also makes a wireless G game adapter that will work with the 360. you can get one new on Ebay shipped for under $40. it is bigger than the 360 adapter, but you can move it to get better reception. I also have the linksys wireless N, but have it set to G for all the PCs in the house.

Is your router wired or are you refurring to wireless...? Because if this whole time you have just been refuring to wired router then yes it will work and all you will need is an ethernet cable to go from the Xbox360 to the router... you only need the 360 adapter if you want wireless which is silly anyways because it lags and cost $99.99

No... If it was just a plan router then you just run an ethernet cable to the router from your Xbox...

Since it is wireless... you need to buy the Xbox360 Wireless Adapter because the Xbox360 does not have built-in wifi...

Look on the back of the router... If it has spare ethernet ports you should be able to save yourself the money for the wireless adapter and just run an ethernet cable from your Xbox360 to the router...

It's much cheaper to use a wired connection, so do it if you can.

Only use wireless as a last resort, ethernet is FAR better. Just plug it in the router and away you go!

I suggest just purchasing a $50 subscription to Xbox live from like best buy or any store actually. You get 13 months for $50 so one extra month for purchasing the card, plus if you pay by credit card they will automatically rebill you for the next year without even asking if you still want it. Not a very cool feature in my opinion.

Thats a great feature in my opinion... I know I will still be gaming a year from now and I know that exactly 1 year from now I won't remember that this was the day I renewed my subscription... so one day I would just get disconnected from live and be in the dark... so it is an awesome feature that they have auto-renewal... it's only 49.99 with no tax because it is an internet purchase so it is always feasible...

A couple of pointers:

1. Someone suggested the Linksys wireless game adapter. Don't do it. I never got it to work. If you absolutely must go wireless get the one for the Xbox.

2. If at all possible go wired. Everyone I know who started wirelessly ended up stringing cables. Less dropped connections, less lag.

3. Check your Linksys router for XBL compatibility. Done from xbox.com/support.Linksys makes many many types.

4. And this gets trickier. You may need to hard code thenetwork settings andenable port forwarding on the router. I had voice and connection problems with my Linksys until I did that. I think it is portforwarding.com and scroll to the bottom right of the page for Xbox 360.

Yes. I believe someone stated it above. You can buy actual subscription cards at Gamestop, EbGames, Walmart, Bestbuy, etc... They come in three options I believe. 1month,3month, and 1 year. The year is the best value because with the other two you will pay much more over time/ !month is like 8$, 3is like 20$ or 30$, and 1year is 50$ and you get a free month with the 1 year. Also when you initially sign up for live. just sign up regularly and join live with the free basic membership. They usually give you a 1 month trial of the gold membership. So get that trial then buy a card. You can see the differences between silver and gold at xbox .com.

okay let me help you out a little bit

none of the other guys are making any sense to me and need to get the facts straight

First of all your going to need to buy a xbox 360 wireless adapter made by microsoft just for the 360...very easy to set up and works great...but it is 100 bucks brand new

next you can buy prepaid cards for xbox live or use a credit card there is a month for 7.99...3 months for 20...6 months for like 30 and 12 months for 50 but when you sign up for 12 months you get a additional 1 month free so really its 13 months...

if you have any other questions please let me know!

Nick

All right so I just checked out xbox.com and am I missing something obvious or is the silver membership really free? If it is then what advantages does the gold have that would make me want to pay for whatI could already get for free? And thanks for helping again. I appreciate it

A simple google search could answer your second question. Probably the first, too.

There are redeemable membership cards you can buy to play online, 1 month, 3 month, and a year. You can also use a credit card to buy your membership without leaving your house, and just using xbl.

As for routers, here is a list of all routers thave contain the xbox live logo on them...

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/homenetworking/equipment.htm

Can't go wrong with any of those routers.

As for your latest question, you can find the advantages of silver, and also gold memberships here...

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/memberships/?WT.svl=nav

To sum it up, you can't play online, download or buy anything from market place, yadayadayada.
