Here's what's happening. I have an old xbox which seems broken, but (and this has happened 2 times now) starts working again if left alone for months/years. The electronic part of it works fine, but something is wrong with the disc reading part, especially after being used multiple times in a day. The last time it started working again it only worked for a week, but this time it seems to be going a little stronger. Because I wasn't sure how long/well it would work, I tried 3 games:

Mercenaries (free-roam third person action, kind of like Grand Theft Auto but in a war environment, used disc)

NASCAR 2006: Total Team Control (Brand New, racing, no explanation required)

MX vs. ATV Unleashed (Free-roam-ish kind of racing, bought disc New, still looks and works like it.)

Here's what happens:

In Mercenaries, the game frequently freezes up and then starts working working again a second later. The audio cuts out often, especially when a lot is happening. Sometimes freezes entirely.

NASCAR 2006: Absolutely no problems. Might freeze a smidge while loading, being unnoticable, but that seems normal enough(?).

MX vs. ATV Unleashed: Works great during gameplay, no problems. However, during loading sequences, there is a good chance that the game freezes.

I've had 2 Xboxes, both used, so I don't know how well it is supposed to work. What should I do? The first time this xbox came back to life, a cleaner disc did little.

I do have a 360, but many of my games are unsupported, and those that are are very glitchy when transfered. Therefore, I don't want to use the 360 for this.

Should I risk buying another used one, take it apart, what?

Thanks a billion in advance.

Sounds like the laser might be dirty. Buy a can of compressed air and clean it out. Don't blow with your mouth since your breath has water in it.

I assume you're referring to Mercenaries: Playground Of Destruction. While I can't say anything about the other two games I do happen to own Mercenaries myself. it randomly freezing (especially in one of the factions zones, pyongyang if I remember correctly) happened to me often. I think it is just due to the fact that it's a crossover from the original X-Box.

There's a button combination to clear the cache. Google what it is, it helped me with issues like that. Also, get one of those laser-cleaning discs with the brushes on the disk. When the disc spins, it cleans the laser. Gamestop has them for around $5. Don't use compressed air as you risk blowing the dust around and making it worse.
