Achievements are for Xbox 360 retail games. For every retail game there is usually 1,000 gamerpoints for that game. It sometimes can go higher than that with downloadable content, usually increasing it to 1,250 gamerpoints. For arcade games there are usually 200 points, sometimes increased to 250, I believe, because of downloadable content. The gamerpoints you earn throughout the games you play combine together to form your gamerscore. Achievements are things that net you gamerpoints. "blah kill someone" 15 gamerpoints. that is an achievement.
yeh every retail and arcade game has gamerpoints there is no actualpoint to gamerpoints except you can try get them which sort of gives you more play, you dont get anything with them thou you can just brag about your high score.
Like the others said, achievement points are for bragging rights, but they also allow for more replay value, so that you can keep going back to play even though you may have already beat the game. In most games, the achievements are spread throughout single and multiplayer tasks, as to break up the monotony.
