Help: xbox live setup problems

My little brother just got an adapter to go online today. Also he got a Live Gold Subscription Card.

The card says to connect the 360 to the internet. Select Join XBOX LIve. Then choose gold, create a profile, and then enter your code.

We connected to the internet, selected Join Xbox live, but then it didnt let us select gold, it made us create a profile that you had to add a credit card to, and never gave us a chance to enter the code.

We didnt finish the process ,we quit when it came up to the credit card information, did we have to go on to get to the card part or is there another way?

Did it say redeem code? If not make a silver account and go redeem the code from the dashboard

i selected join xbox live, then instead of selecting gold account like the card said, the 360 made me set up a profile. i put in the name, paswords, birthdate, and then it got to the credit card part and it still didnt give an option to redeem the code.
