It's like comparing... oh forget it...
They're completely different types of games. GEARS is a third person shooter, Halo 3 is a shoot from the hip first person shooter, and COD4 is a war games (aiming) first person shooter.
If you're asking which community is best, they're all full of prepubescent children - and adults - who will get on your nerves and make you want to strangle them.
Halo 3 has a mute feature, which is really nice. I haven't found one in GEARS or COD4, though I could just be missing it.
So really, it all comes down to what type of FPS you like playing. These three are vastly different subcategories of FPS, and you need to play them yourself in order to find the one that is right for you.
