Hmm... CoD 4 or Mass Effect? Which one would keep me going longer?

I'm real short on hours at work, so I can only afford to get one or the other this month.

Which do you think would last longer? I played the first Call of Duty (still do) for months and months on end without tiring, but Mass Effect looks like KOTOR (well, makes KOTOR look like a simple demo), and the last time I checked KOTOR had an extreme replay value to it when it first arrived. I've been bored with Call of Duty before (because it's just senseless fragfests over and over), but I usually always come back to it. CoD 2 sucked. CoD 4 looks and plays unlike CoD 2 though. Some things are similiar but it's overall a different game.

Anyway, tell me what you think (and don't say anything negative. Keep it clean and helpful or you will be reported and possibly suspended). Thanks :)

I am having to make the same decesion. I played COD4 Beta and that was definetly fun. Mass Effect lokks like an epic rpg. I am going with Mass Effect, but you should get what appeals to you more. Sci-fi rpg or modern war fare.

Probably Call of Duty 4 because it has multiplayer, but I think Mass Effect is going to be the better game.

It's really hard for me to decide. I'm a heavy FPS and RPG gamer (except, I've been out of RPG games for a long time because we haven't had a good one for a long while). I would probably go with Mass Effect, but it's not coming out til the 20th :(

I don't even look at it as being a contest; CoD is a good series but the constant run-and-gun is tired and over-played. Sure, the same comment could be made about RPGs like Mass Effect, but there is much more to Mass Effect substance-wise.

You should purchase Mass Effect - you'll get your money's worth out of it. CoD4, sure it has multiplayer, but I'm sure you're already gunning it up on Halo 3 or something like that on multiplayer - so is it really that big a bargain?

Another thing (sorry to go on a tangent) but if that is the only thing that sells you on a game anyways is the multiplayer, then that's a sad purchase anyways - because that means that developers didn't have to go through all the trouble to create an impressive storyline and great effects, graphics, dialogue, and the like if all one was going to do was ignore all that and frag people until they're blue in the face.

I mean, Mass Effect looks to me like Half-Life and Half-Life 2, the reason I say that is because when those games came out - people said "wow, that's really innovative" but for games recently like Halo 3, yeah, there was hype and fanfaire but was the game really that impressive as far as leaps in technological advancement? I would say no.

But for Mass Effect I would say that it is a good game with so much to offer that I think you would get bored by just running around and shooting people like in CoD4.

It depends on how much time you think you will spend playing CoD 4 Multiplayer, I'd probably go for Mass Effect though.

Lol no no. this isn't a contest between the two. I just can't get both right away, so I'm going to have to get one or the other for right now. I think I will go with Mass Effect...I may get too frustrated when playing online with all the run/gun, spray/prayers in CoD 4.

If you cant choose both atm, I'd say go for Call of Duty 4. Only because it has multiplayer, it will keep you going until you can afford Mass Effect.

ok if you want a good singleplayer game buy mass effect, because if you rush CoD4 through it ends after 5 hours. But if you look for some good multiplayer stuff buy CoD4.

Btw, i'll going toBUY ASSASINS CREED. *gg*

cant really compare the 2 games in my opinion, as one is a shooter and the other one an rpg. So, it really depends on whats your thing. For me, Mass Effect is a must buy. But to be honest, so is CoD4 and Assasins Greed. So, probably gonna buy Assasins Greed 1st, Mass effect @nd and Cod4 as soon as i get some cash flow. Damn, i need a 2nd job.......

COD4 will most likely last you longer. They have an RPG like Multiplayer where you level up, and you unlock a new way to play the game after you reach level 65. If you aren't into multiplayer, then Mass Effect will last you WAY longer than COD4.

Thanks for the replies. I might get Call of Duty 4 instead, but solely because it comes out today...and I'd have to wait 2 weeks for Mass Effect. I want MORE in a game, more variety. Something that I *will not* get bored with. I have Halo 3 for a run-gun fest, and also Call of Duty 1 for the PC which I kick ass at. So, I'm deciding whether or not multiplayer is a prime concern right now. I may wait for the reviews from IGN and Gamespot to see what they have to say.

I'm definitely going for Mass effect, then later COD4, because ME is like oblivion, but on the Space, so that to me means many hours of gameplay, good story, dialogue, many things to sort out, and bunches and bunches of bugs to kill, i have Rainbow 6, halo 3 COD3 and some more to keep me busy "multiplaying". But i Just have oblivion and overlord to enjoy some kind of different guilty pleasure, mass Effect all the way for me, what do you think?

I'm a bit indecisive. It could go either way at this point. I would choose Mass Effect over CoD 4 right now, but it doesn't come out for another 2 weeks - -

then you have one advantage, one of your friends will get the game?

try it, and if you love it and can't wait to play something new, get it, but i'm really sure, and i don't want to be wrong, that mass Effect is the best game you can get this year's end.

Mass Effect is a 50+ hours game, 30 for the main quest, 20+ for exploration and sidequests while Call of Duty has less then 10 hours for the singleplayer and [depend how much you play it] hours for multiplayer ( for me multiplayer gets boring very quickly because I play games for their stories ). And ME's campaing is A LOT more replayable, so for me ME is a LOT longer ( and everyone will probably finish it more than 3 times ). There'll also be downloadable content for more missions and you can continue playing the game even AFTER you've finished the main quest

I hate most FPSs ( except the Call of Duty series, horror FPSs and Riddick )

I'd say Mass Effect because of it's uniqueness. That'll keep you playing for a while and ME's campaign takes a while and even more hours for exploration and sidequests etc.

It really depends on your taste in games and what you feel like playing.

CoD4 is going to be great, however the single player game will be short compared to Mass Effect. COD4 shines in Multiplayer. However, for some people even multiplayer does not keep them happy long. Like me for example, once I play each map a dozen or so times each I get sick of the game. Thats why I tend to play multiplayer fps games on the pc so I can download new maps constantly.

On the other hand, Mass Effect is going to be a epic single player experience likely to last you 50 hours on your first run through. If it's anything like kotor was (and probably will be) alot of people will be playing through twice just to see different endings and play different classes. I know with kotor I personally beat it and started a new game immediately and beat it again before I moved on to a new game.

Also, Mass effect comes out near the end of the month. By the time your done with it a new month will be here and you might be able to squeeze a new game into your budget. =)

This month hit my pocket book hard I just bought Naruto, COD4, Assassin's Creed, Mass effect, And The witcher.

That's what I had in mind. The fact that Mass Effect is single-player only is a little "eh", but it'll be a HUGE game from what I hear, correct? Massive. Allowing you to explore tons and tons of different planets and lands, right?

Still, I may pick up CoD 4 tomorrow/today...just solely because it's out today and Mass Effect won't be out for 2 weeks.

Yeah Mass Effect will be Massive, with multiple planets to explore. Alot like other open exploration RPG games the length of the game largely depends on how much you focus on the central story line. If yo focus on beating the game it can be done in well under 50 hours. However, if you take your time and really explore the universe (litterally with this game) it can last you over 50 hours.

If I had to live with 1 game this month I would rent both Cod4 and Assassins Creed to keep me busy till Mass Effect.

Yeah the thing is, CoD 4 probably WILL keep me longer since I used to play (and still do) the first Call of Duty every waking minute of my life. Me and the CoD series have a history together, we do. :P But only because of the multiplayer. Call of Duty's single player has always been climatic and epic, but where it really shines is the multiplayer...everyone knows that.

But yeah like I said I'll prolly get CoD 4 just because it's being released today...y'konw? I still dont know much about Assassin's Creed...but I'll definitely look into getting that after Mass Effect. Then I'll get me some Gears of War for the PC if it's good enough :)

I think Mass Effect will overall be the better game but I think if you want the one that will keep you playing the most, then I think you should get Call of Duty 4 because the MP is what seperates it from Mass Effect. I guess it just depends if you have Live and if you are a fan of online shooters.

I just think it's kinda funny that we're sorta deciding what someone should spend their money on, lol. Well, good luck with either choice, both are good games, I'm saving my money for Mass Effect myself (notice my prior plug for that game). If you like CoD4 that's great - I look forward to playing that game in the future, but my heart is set on Mass Effect - something about it just seems promising...

I have live but I'm getting it for PC. Me and CoD have a history together we do, and that involves me playing with a mouse. :P

I'm depressed for the moment, though. My Gamestop didn't get CoD 4 today so I'll have to wait one more day. Oh well. Someone in this thread earlier mentioned that when they beat KOTOR, they immediately created a new file to replay the game...which is what I did. I can really see myself doing that with Mass Effect right off the bat also. Gaaaaaaah they're both going to be so kick ass.

I would say just throw down 7 bucks and go rent CoD4 or Assasin's Creed tomorrow if you can afford it, then since blockbuster has the whole no late fees thing keep it till Mass Effect is released then go buy Mass Effect, and prepare to cut off all social contactwith other human beingsfor awhile :P

There are two things wrong with that:

I know CoD 4 will be the ownage, and secondly blockbuster sucks. They never have what I want. It's always out of stock.

Depends, I know CoD 4 will have better multiplayer, since Mass Effect has no multiplayer. Mass Effect will hold your attention if you wanana get every last side mission and storyling completed, CoD will hold your attention if you wanna kill all your friends lol. Its your choioce, both are gonna be blockbusters.
