Yes I could use the ethernet cable, but my 360 is downstairs and my computer is upstairs. I dont plan on moving my 360 upstairs where my brother and sister can get ahold of it. And I dont want to run a long ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs. So I have to go with the wireless adapter. And what do you mean by the original xbox adapter? Someone else here must have their 360 hooked up online via wireless adapter that isn't the MS version...swordwarior
when the original Xbox was made (Xbox 1... the black console that Halo 1 came out on), MS created a wireless adapter for it. you can buy that adapter and use it for the X360. since that product is old, it should go for cheaper at any store... and they are compatible with each other. the only problems with it is that its design does not match with the X360 (the adapter is black and bulky looking), and it might be hard to find since its an old product (you might have to buy the thing online).
I own a DLink GWL-G810 wireless bridge. This little box can be connected directly to your laptop, configured as a wireless access point, then be connected directly to your 360. I have been using this for three years now (with the XBOX, then the 360) with great success - my console is 1 floor above and 20 feet over from the wireless access point. For reference, it took me only 11 minutes to download the recent MLB 2K7 demo posted to XBOX Live (I have a 8Mbps cable Internet service).
Check this out -works great for me.
Good luck... I really don't recommend any other adapters, especially when (if you can find one) they're only a little bit cheaper than the microsoft one that's made specifically for the 360 and works like a charm. Plus it's small, and snaps right into the back of the 360 via USB... all other adapters need to connect via an ethernet cable since they wont work via USB because they'd need drivers to run, which the 360 wont support.
Just spend the few extra bucks and do it right if you want wireless.
Why buy a bridge like the 810 (which has gotten horrible reviews, just check amazon) when you're only saving less than $40. The Microsoft adapter works flawlessly.
Here's the bridge, if you want to read what others thought of it.

Swordwarrior - looks like DLink updated the product - see http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=333. Last I checked, it cost $88 CDN compared to $129.99 CDN for the 360 wireless adapters. Some notes/caveats for you:
If you go ahead with this and run into trouble, hit me up via PM and I can assist.
Good luck!
As long as you have a place to plug the G820 in, don't worry about it.
RE: poor reviews on G810 - the *original* G810 had crappy firmware. Once the firmware was upgraded (about 3 years ago), the unit has worked flawlessly.
I also have a DLink wireless access point, so that may be why.
But...it works for me.
Point taken - first party stuff always works better than third-party, since Microsoft designed the USB wireless adapter to work with the 360 - but you pay for the privilege.
Swordmaster - if you don't want to purchase online, walk into any big box retailer (ex: Future Shop, Best Buy)and ask them - they might have it. Also...remember that the G820 is just a wireless "bridge". Technically, you could purchase a wireless "bridge" from any manfacturer and have it work...
Word of advice - if you decide to purchase the wireless bridge, ask the store about thier returns policy. Ask about 'restocking fees' - some stores charge you upto 15% to take the item back - and they deduct it from your refund.
Pick a store with no restocking fee...this way, if the thing does not work out for you, you can simply return it and get your money back. It will only take you 30-60 minutes to know if the device will/will not work for you.
Good luck!
