To cut a long story short, my cable is playing up and I'm forced to use dialup at home for the next few weeks (I hope not that long), so I'm wondering is there any way I can get the Fall Update for the 360 as a download and burn it on to a disc ? I remember microsoft once had this available for the HD-DVD update on their official site.

Thanks.

Yes you can go to the Xbox website and download a file to burn to CD or DVD. Here's the link: www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/console/systemupdates.htm

Currently, however, it looks like it's only the May 2007 update. So you will probably have to wait a week or so before the December 2007 update is available.

Or you can't wait and buy the OXM magazine. They sometimes include it onto their monthly disk.

You can use dialup to get the update, connect your 360 to your PC and select to share your internet connection. It might take an hour or 2 but it does work, I have used it before.
