The people make their money based on what they report... If after a while, their report shows a trend in consumer buying and selling of games, systems, computers, etc... Other companies will keep track of who is reporting on what for who, then the people who seems to be giving the better reports over time and after adding the trends to the specific that the person is reporting on... That person will either get cut loose or keep getting better gigs, with more money attached.. You gotta think of it like jewelry... What (in this case who) is the rarest commodity? What are you willing to pay out to get that commodity (in our case person)? Does this help at all??

Machinima is bigger than you think, covering games, going to events like PAX and others isn't free either.

I have no idea what you just said, but they get payed by google ads to have adverts featured on their videos, and get a fraction of a penny per view the video gets, if you get accepted into the youtube partnership programme

I imagine they get paid by advertising by the people that view them, there's often ads before their videos, and if they've a large enough base of viewers then that's money guaranteed

Machinims is a company... and the directors get paid through the machinima advertisement program.
