I hope in the next xbox (or possibly in the 360) they make it so you can buy themes and gamer pictures with gamer score.
I find it pretty stupid that you have to pay to advertise a game...
Yea, I don't think it's a big deal. If we could trade them in for downloads or something it would different.SnipeyMcSnipe
Thats a fantastic idea but instead of being able to download demos why not being able to download gamer pictures, themes, maps and music.
I think they will keep the gamerscores and achievements. It's just good marketing. It gives people an incentive to buy more games, and specifically the achievement nerds (Although people can rent the games), it makes the attachment rate for the Xbox 360 much higher. Think of those with a PS3 or a Wii, and with the multiplatform titles. People will more likely to buy the 360 version because of achievements.
It also gives people an incentive to go back and play their games again. This makes the games life longer. If there were no 10,000 kills achievement in Gears of War, those hardcore players on ranked might go play something else. And if if more people are playing games longer, that provides an opportunity for new gaming content which people will buy (Gears of War maps), hence, it is more money for microsoft and the gaming companies. It's a good marketing scheme.
Personally, I bought some new games that I never thought I would because of achievements, even though I know they mean nothing. I think it's more about getting a sense of accomplishment, and having it recorded in your profile. It's much more rewarding to go back and play a game on hard mode and get rewarded for it.

Very well said. Agreed 100%.

wow good idea i never thought of it that way but that would be much better. then u wouldnt have to buy ms points and there would be more marketplace stuff because it would be free for companies to advertise!
You could give me all the numbers, but you have to understand that achievement points are cumulative, meaning they add up from all your other accomplishments. Bascially, a number on your gamerscore is the representative of your hard work in a game, and people might say "Oh you game too much", yet all gamers are different, and I couldn't care less whether jimmy plays a game more than I do because he probably likes the game.
But yes, it probably would be great to be rewarded with something real, but it doesn't mean it's necessary.
It's much more rewarding to go back and play a game on hard mode and get rewarded for it.

and to be able to show/prove to your friends that you did is also nice

QFT... achievements aren't going away. In fact, the whole trophy thing for PS3? Why do you think they're doing it? Because achievement points have made money for MS. I haven't bought any games explicitly for achievements, though I have gone out of my way to beat games on their hardest difficulty levels for them. But I've got people on my friends list who are in their 30s and are playing Ratatouie (sic?) right now, so that means something. Well, it probably means a couple of things.
That being said, I doubt MS will transfer them to the 3rd Xbox system, though I wouldn't think they'd include PC games like they are now either. No way to really tell. Not fair to people who jump ship next gen though, is it?

Well said. I like achievements because it gives you reason to do things in games. Seriously is the perfect example.
It just will transfer. Its as simple as that. The gamerscore follows you with your gamercard. In the same way that you can recover your gamerscore on Xbox 360, it will recover your gamerscore with it. Gamerscore is not something that is saved on to the Xbox360 harddrive, its registered with your Xbox Live account, and because you pay for that account you get to have gamerscores, When the new Xbox comes out you will be able to recover that gamerscore as long as you have the account open.
How do you think you are able to view your gamerscore with your .NET passport. Microsoft thought it through you know, its not something that will be impossible to integrate into a new Xbox. The databases with this information is available on the Xbox live network and it wont be dissapearing. That would make alot of people angry, and i don't think Microsoft is looking to get bad reviews.
You'll soon be able to actually use your score for something meaningful if the rumors are correct. We shall see.BounceDKI hope that will be true...
Being rewarded for it?thanks for the psychology lesson, some times you need to know that other people think what you did is pretty good too. if everyone did things for themselves we would live in a pretty messed up world
What are they rewarding you with? Numbers? Oh ok, let me reward you. 0374029384. Let me reward you some more. 2934720978420938472093472. Feeling accomplished yet? 23740938240. I bet you are now. 8273842
Beat the game, feel accomplished. Not becuase of a little message that pops of saying you beat it. An accomplishment is a mental feeling, you shouldn't care if any one can see your accomplishment or not. An achieivement is the feeling knowing you worked forsomething and knowing you had success in trying.Warlock89
i never thought about it like that. i think that games with ads should actually cost less. EA i'm looking at u. racing games shouldn't since a lot of the ads there are already in the game, like ads for cars. i have a feeling that they are going to be doing that. i think that it will actually add something new to it also. it's just what i think will happen.I find it pretty stupid that you have to pay to advertise a game...

I don't think that a third Xbox will come out anytime in the next 3 or 4 years, so it's too soon to really know what will happen between now and then on the 360.
Also, buying things with Gamerscore? I don't think so. I have over 10k GS, and I've seen others with much more, so GS having the same value or anywhere even closeto Microsoft Points wouldn't work, seeing as a 1.6k MP card is $20 USD, and so on. It also wouldn't work seeing as they share the money made from the downloads to the Devs/Pubs, even if it's for useless stuff. Microsoft wouldn't cover the cost of us on the things we buy when it comes down to the third-party getting their share of the money.
