how does your Live account work on a friends Xbox1?

If my friend does NOT have a Gold account. Can I log into his system with my account and be able to play on Live?

@mercuria1_king: well, it looks like I got screwed by MS back in November. When I had trouble trying to get two separate Xbox Ones operating on the same account,( not at the same time of course). MS told me I needed two separate Gold accounts.

That's strange. My friend was able to sign onto his at my house.
