Remember for this trick you need to open your xbox 360 which means if ur still under warranty you wont be able to send it back to microsoft if it is unsuccesful. I found this guide on a fourm and its worked for many people including me.

Ok you will need

A roll of electrical tape
8 or 12 pennies depending on how much pressure you want to apply (I used 8)
Kit to open an xbox360 (T10 and T8) screwdriver to open hardrive. THeir are tutorials on Youtube for opening xbox if u need.

I was getting these freezing crashes, With a nice checkered pattern and crackling sound effect to go with it.

After a these crashes became more frequent eventually it would no longer boot up just red lights of death

So what to do is get your self some electrical tape and some pennies I used 8 pennies = 2 pennies for each replacement thermal pad for the ram

So cut the electrical tape long enough to wrap around the pennies. I wrapped 2 bits of tape around each twice

When you have your 4 replacement pads, Double up some tape i.e so its sticky both sides then attach them to your motherboard

If you cant quite get the pennes to stick on the chips try a hot glue gun and slightly dab it on the back of the pennes and stick it on.

When you have finished that re assemble your xbox360. Put back all of the screws including the gpu and cpu heatsink (x-clamp) screws and do them all up nice and tight

When you have fully re asembled your xbox360 try starting it up. If it doesnt work and you still have 3 red lights don't worry (yet). This is when you need to apply heat, their are differnt methods but I tried the towel trick for 18 mins.

And then hey presto its working again!

This trick has been tested on 40 xbox 360's 11 months ago and out of the 40 only 1 failed.

THis helped me hope it helps you to. =D

That is a great idea and post, but somebody like me would be too stupid to try it. I'll take the risk and send it back.

Very nice - you are in essence making a VERY inexpensive heatsink by using copper. You could also use actual heatsink which would dissapate the heat more than this method but would cost you more in the neighborhood of $10. Still this is a really cool trick that seems in theory like it should work fine. Also I commend you for throwing out the voiding your warranty caveat - as this most definitely would void your warranty if it was still in effect.

I tried something similar but it did not work. Now I can't get my box repaired at all, even though it was out of warranty when i tried to fix it.

I'll have to try that one out. My 360 sometimes works and most of the time doesn't. Waiting for some free time and i'm going to try the x-clamp replacement. But this one sounds like a potentially good trick.

Anyone know where you could get small heatsyncs for the ram? They're soo tiny i'm not sure where you'd find one. But those suckers sure get hot. I have a feeling the heatsyncs won't fix mine though because i have mine setup with pc fans blowing directly onto the top and it doesn't work. They're much cooler but still red lights on boot. But hey it's worth a try lol.

Oh and for the person who did this. Did you have the thermal pads on the chips under the mobo on the ram?

Yes I did. You have to remove those and replace them with the pennies wrapped in electric tape. The copper in the pennies work alot better than those pads and should prevent mostly all xbox 360's from overheating and fix/prevent 3 red light issue.

I wonder just how heat-resistant that electrical tape is? It would seem to me that the thing would heat up and melt the tape.

Well when Microsoft is too lazy to fix the problem I guess the solution has to come from the consumers.

What could possibly be the purpose of a fraud here? It's a consumer who's tech-savvy enough to fix his own problem. Cheers to the TC.

There isn't much harm in trying it if your brave enough to open the system. I'll give it a try this weekend as i've been too busy lately to try it out. If it works then cool. One thing i know for sure those ram chips get insanely hot. When i had mine working i decided to touch it to see how hot and man it's almost like it will burn your finger lol.

The riskier one is the x-clamp replacement. This one is soo simple to try.

ya know i hate to say this but does anyone think microsoft intentionally did this to their consoles? I mean i dont think people buy 360s and then if they break they'll be like "ok who cares i dont want another one"--they know people are going to want to fix their consoles and they know that after that warranty expires they can charge for it--if ya ask me microsoft knows how to make the pennies roll into their wallets so i think its cool you found a way to fix the360 with some pennies of your own

the X clamps are overstressing the mainboard. When the mainboard becomes hot enough, It starts bending and Xbox360 gives a failure. While M-B is bending , CPU and GPU units' solders are melting down and The pinsbecome semi-Free. So Xbox360 could give a CPU or GPU error. I hope microsoft solve this problem with 65nm revision of CPU and GPU equipped Xbox360s.

Aluminum is also a really good material for a heat sink. I may try this method with really packed foil, electrical tape, and RTV.

Man, I got my xbox for repairs a month ago and still waiting. Tomorrow I am picking it up, with the 3 lights still on....hate MS for that. I am definitely giving this a try after i try 2 other "cures" i saw online(the towel one and the classic left-side punch:p) if they don't work I will do this. Saw a similar one, instead of coins with tape, they were using rubber, this easier(don't have to cut the rubber:P. Thanks a lot. PS: What is the size of your coins?

that seems like it would work, well... it did according to you. unforunately my 360 doesn't have the 3 red lights of death, no I dont mean that I want it but I mean that I'd rather have that problem then error 74 which is an av cable error. I've got 2 av cables, and both of them have the exact same effect, so my 360 is to blame. there isn't a guide on how to fix error 74 is there?

I was a bit sceptical about this. i tried the towel trick ages ago and that done nothing, replaced the compound with Arctic Silver; that done nothing, and just tried this one with the pennies. I have just played COD3 for about an hour with no problems at all. At last I ve fixed my 360. Instead of spending £85 on a refurb I spent 8p and fixed it myself :D Thanks mate! Oh yeah, I tried replacing the X clamps a few weeks ago as well but that didnt help either.

I guess in this day and age, we got to worry about overheating in all the parts, not just mainly the CPU and GPU. Although desktop computer RAM modules, especially high speed performance DDR2 ones, have heatsinks built onto them, like my DDR2 1066 :D. But even still the 360's GDDR3 SRAM runs at a blazing clock speed of 700 MHz (1400 MHz effective). T'would need the cooling.

they have new heat sinks in the newer modles supposedly. but tbh they need more silent fans. and maybe one more of them.

3 fans maybe instead of two, and some better heat sinks...maybe even some better thermal paste

This worked for me, I'm so glad I found this thread.

Been working for the past 2hours, I just hope its not the 'towel trick' working since I used it to heat the xbox up.

I'll post an update in a couple days! Thnx OP.
