Got into an argument with my bud who says games like Halo or Call of Duty could do without a well produced score. I could see where he was coming from, shooters with little story need not epic music, but without Marty O'Donnell I think Halo wouldn't be the same. What is everyone else's opinion on this?

At the least 50% of the game for me, Halo had the best sound and music and still does in the 300 plus games i have bought since Halo. The only grip i have had about games is the weak sound of weapons. Some are great others are weak, The reason i never got into gears of war, weak sounding guns ! and yes i have a very high end sound system. MW2 has amazing sonding guns, "black" Had great guns.

Ever since I got a nice surround sound system, gaming has been so much more enjoyable. Not only the score, but all of the little sound effects too. I would definitely say music is a huge importance in a game because it sets you up for a certain feeling. I definitely get more pumped up with an epic symphony orchestra in the background when I know I'm about to go into an epic battle.

Sound is pretty important in any game, whether it being from the background music to the sounds of gunfire. I think that bad sound can ruin a game but it can also add the finish touch to a game aswell.

For story driven games the music can be important for atmosphere, some games its hardly needed. I don't think I could have ever fallen in love with Silent Hill without its music and to some extent I could say the same about the original Fable. but I find myself turning the music to about 25% in any FPS most of the time I cant hear it over the combat and I hate when I mistake a beep or bop for my phone and look away for nothing.

I think speech in games is a larges subject, a lot of the games I have played recently don't have good speech options and to me its really important. I don't like having to have the subtitles on while I play a game and I find it frustrating when the sound of combat or music clouds speech, or when the speech dose not have its own volume level and it shares one with the music you end up with mumbles.

sound effects are very important, music not so much. In fact I often turn the music off in order to better hear the sound effects. playing silent is kind of awkward, I don't like it.

I agree with what George Lucas once said, " Sound and music are 50% of the entertainment in a movie". This of course can easily apply to games. I don't play games without sound. Sound sets the mood for a game. If you're playing Bioshock, an eery, disturbing sound enhances the gameplay. If you take that out, sure it may be a bit creepy, but not AS creepy as the developers would have liked.

Scores (soundtracks), depends on the game. I think it was a huge deal in ME, but for other games i could care less.

SFX - huge deal for me

Art is essential for a game to be truly great. Think about how different your experience with Halo: Combat Evolved would have been without the music.
