I use all three... The WIFI connector in the back, a keyboard and a wired controller in the front. Does using more USB slots increase changes of overheating? How many are you using?
I use the two ports at the front of the console for a keyboard and a Vision Camera. And devices you connect to your 360 don't increase its heating levels in any way at all.
I use one slot for one wired controller. I only use my wireless controller when I move my 360 into a bigger room, then the wired controller cord is not long enough.
Aside from using 2 when rock band is in the mix, just one to power my ps3 controller charger. If only my ps3 had a usb plug in the back... I feel so dirty doing it :? Like im cheating on my ps3 or something

I remember you had to buy this in order for your 360 controller to work on your PC. I'm guessing you'd still have to use this unless it's a wired one.
I lost my Rockband USB thing, so when I play Rockband with friends I need all 3, with a wireless guitar. When I am not playing Rockband, I use the front 2, one for my wireless controller charger and the second for my wireless headset charger.
Wi-Fi in the back, external 250 GB HDD in the front for custom music and watching movies, and 4-way USB HUB in the other front slot, for Rock Band and other various times I need an extra slot or two.

I use all three 1 for my zune, 1 for my wifi, and 1 for controller charger/webcam. Also, what do you use a keyboard and mouse for?
I am pretty much always using 2-3 and more! 1 for the wireless network connection, 1 for my iPod, one for the "Play and Charge" cable (which I use 90% of the time so I should just get a wired controller lol) and sometimes I use an external USB hub for Rock Band/Guitar Hero.
