I think this year wasa huge jump as far as graphics for teh 360 games. Just look at the character models in ME vs Oblivion or COD4 vs earlier games. Do you think the graphics will get even better next year or will we see more polishing of what is already there? It just seems to me like a year ago there was one game that really took advantege of the graphics which was gears. This year there are several now with ME, COd4, Bioshock, Ass Creed etc.. Will we just continue to see more games like that or will the graphics get better?

You get games that always look better, year after year, as developers use the platform more efficiently. The improvements may be enormous, they may not. That's the way it's always been so yes, the graphics will improve throughout the console's lifespan.

The Xbox 360 is already tapped out.

Epic already stated this after they made Gears of War.

Epic later admitted they had to tone down Gears of War for the 360. The PC version of Gears is the true form of the game.

I don't think it can get better than Mass Effect.

Notice how in the Citadal (the city in Mass Effect for those who don't know) , they had to turn v-sync off (so you had lots of screen tearing) to make up for the framerate.

The graphics will obviously get better, Epics comment was ridiculas because the only console I can think of that peaked that early in technical achievments was the DC and that was only because they stopped supporting it. When MGS2 came out on the PS2 people claimed they had tapped everything out of it but try telling that to GOW or SOTC.

Not a good example as Bioware couldn't code a decent game engine if their life depended on it.

They will get slightly better...the problem is with the game engines. Most developers license the Unreal 3 engine if they are going after eye candy...the problem is, that U3 is becomming tapped out and has texture loading issues...Just look at Gow, R6V and Mass Effect, all the same texture issues.

If a developer is willing to spend the extra time and make a propriatory engine for the game, they can squeeze more from the hardware...Project gotham 4, CoD4 for example

For the most part though, we are seeing some of the limits already. The trick is now for developers to concentrate on optimization and gameplay rather than get lazy and just turn on as many bells and whistles as they can

I agree completely. Eventually the novelty of this generations graphic capabilities will wear off and developers will have to make gameplay a top priority. Moreso than they are already.

It'll be interesting to see when that happens. Eventually games will be limited by just how much detail can actually be put into a game. It seems like the biggest limitation will soon be money and time rather than technical power.

I think 360 games can look better but not by any huge leaps and bounds. But I think we'll see overall performance improve. Games won't look a whole lot better than Gears or Mass Effect but they'll run alot better with very little if any slow down or texture load in issues.

I think making a game look good has alot more to it than just the sharpness and detail of objects/people.

COD 4 has alot of good graphic touches - they did alot to make places look like a warzone, with rubbish and crap everywhere.

yeah i think they will get slightly better, not to the point of being crazy amount better, but i think the top end of the graphics will perform better as they get more and more used to working with the console, its the usual trend anyways, for every system ive had the games have always had much better graphics in the end than at the launch of the console. be crazy to expect radicle changes to the amount of detail etc, but they still will get better at it, you probally just notice smoother running frame rates when games are whacking out the best it can do rather than much better detail

This is probably true at the time. BUt Gears of war do not have the best graphics, hate to break it to you. They are really good, but everything is so linear its not that hard to do, they fit a couple of bad guys in a small well detailed hallway, trying making a complete city to look that well. BUT! as the first topic states, the more companies get used to the platform the more efficiently it can be used. Equalling better graphics, bigger games and so on. I really doubt gears of war 2 will be the exact same as gears of war 2. l2read

What Paradise needs to do is go buy some games for the PS3 so they can have a million seller other than a launch title and stop trolling

The question is kind of moot IMHO. I love eye candy as much as the next gamer but I'm not going to play any game just because it looks good. I've been more than happy with the eye candy on the 360. Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, etc. all look great and play smooth. If they keep that up I'll be really happy.

We need to consider too that the 360 doesn't have a super high capacity DVD drive like the blue ray player in the PS3 so that will limit the texture sizes some what for large games like Mass Effect.

Not to start a console war but I noticed in the preview of the upcomin Rainbow Six Vegas 2 in the latest OXM issue that they mentioned something about needing to reduce the textures or something to make the game compatible with the lower memory in the PS3. Sounded to me like the PS3 with it's massive storage media might actually be more limiting on texture sizes that the XBox due to the lower memory? Make any sense? If so, those games intended for both systems may not look as great as XBox exclusives.

I foresee 360 games looking about at a Killzone 2 level then maxing out there. I think the 360 hardware is capable of it, gues we'll need to wait and see.

dude, there are many games that look better than Gears now, so obviously they tapped out the 360 at the time, games always advance year after year on consoles because the console makers always put restraints on the system and always unlock more of its graphical powers as time passes by.

the games on the 360 r by far the best graphics l've seen, god i almost messed me pants when l got a ps2 and saw how far the graphics had come on that lol.

gears of war graphics blew my mind and my wifes mind to, and she hates computer games lol, so it must be doing something right,

as different ppl bring out newer and better consoles out the graphics will become more and more relestic, i have both gears of war and call of duty 4 (which the wife bought both of shock horror lol) have bioshock but as of yet notplayed it due to working 60 hour weeks grrrrrrrrr, fifa is anothr game that l think that has come along way with player movements and graphics

l'll finish by saying l hope microsoft keep bringing out these amazing games for the 360, cuz l'll keep working to pay for em

Developers need to focus not so muh on making the games looking more glistening and bright, but all around more detailed. Mass Effect might have not had the best graphics (with the pop up and tearing), but it had so muh detail in the character faces and things like that.

And why would you trust a statement by a company that cant even give Gears a decent multiplayer game? Or make UT3 look a little different than Gears (some on, look at the main character, and tell me he's not a carbon copy of Marcus Fenix!!)?

Maybe not much better. But step back and take a look at the games today. Fanboyism aside. They all look incredible.

Its true its not maxed out, UT3 has more detail than gears, however out of the 3 cores the 360 has, only 2 do any processing towards games the 3rd deals with management. Oh and the PC version of gears is bad, it control horribly from what I hear.
