2010. The 360 is basically a high end computer stuffed into a small case. Computer technology ages and becomes obsolete quickly. Therefore, I say 2010 max.

I think we have more than 3 years to go. I realize technology ages, but we're not talking about selling PC parts here. The PS2 lasted for years and made tons and tons of money. If you're in the business of worrying about the next-best-tech you should spend more time with your PC. The 360 needs to last a while and it has plenty more than 3 years of life left in it.

It will be approximately 5 years until a new console comes out.  That is usual time frame for next-gen hardware to come out.

Well the PS2 was launched here in the UK in 2001 IIRC...so I'd go with 6 to 7 years for the 360 and PS3. The higher end gfx and capabilities will shine by then. Also some Sony commentators have said that the PS3 will go for ten....hmm you never know!

Ade.

That is if they manage to actually create next-gen hardware. There was a time back early Dreamcast days around 2000 when there was NO advances in the graphic field. Backbefore then, graphic cards was just a seperate set of memory. Then they added a processor, then doubled memory, then AGP came along, thats when things kind of slumped so they just added more memory. 5-6 years later, graphic boards are like a stand alone computers anyway, what with their 32-bit boards, 2 processors and seperate RAM. And now we're starting to use 64-bit in PC's, which is near the limit. A Computer can only send information roughly the same speed as sound. But not its pysically impossible to get it any faster, save maybe using blinking lights for the 1's and 0's? Then what after that? It would have to be faster then the speed of light. By this time you need an entire team of NASA scientists to create a game. I think theres going to be a huge slump in graphic evoloution over the next few years untill a whole new way of processing graphic and computer information is invented. Maybe 6 years untill the next big break through?

I think the next Xbox will be released holiday season 2010. Kiss goodbye to the 360 about three months after that.

I think microsoft will release it sooner than most think, first to the shelf with a new console has a slight advantage. I say fall 2009, the 360 will roughly be 4 yrs old then.

It's actually the switches on the transistor that are causing this problem.  They are working so hard that they are overheating.  Some guy at IBM has already figured out how to switch them 100 times faster than the fastest processor today without overheating.  There will be faster processors in the future.  They just arent ready yet.

To show you that I'm not BSing...here's an article!

As for this topic, I'd say we will see a ramp up in 2010 and by the 2011 holiday season we will see a new XBOX...Or whatever they will call it by then.  It always has been this way with game systems.  They usually last about 5-6 years!
