Ever thought its the joypad, and make sure you go in the settings and see you have it set to hear through the headset and not the speakers.

make sure your volume is all the way up. but my 360 headset also broke, where i cant hear people but they can hear me. If it doesn't fix it by raising the volume, try looking around in  your profile settings. I'm pretty sure there is an option for this.

Make sure you push it all the way in... it snaps. Adjust the volume.

Ive never had a problem with mine but ive heard a lot about them just being horable maybe you have bad luck and it could even be your controler isnt sending a signal to the headset

Do what the few people above me said and hopefully thats the problem

push all the way in
make sure its not on mute (little switch on jack)
turn up volume
on xbox 360 dashboard theres an option for it, like talk to no one, friends only, everyone, its defaulted to talk to no one i think, for parental safety or something, i know thats how i solved my exact same problem
