I had a little trouble setting it up last night. Just read the instruction book and it's simple.
Basically just plug it into the console and attach the adapter to the back of the console, and then read the instruction book, or call support, or check on xbox website.
Are you in the System section of the dashboard (not the menu screen on the right, the full screen dashboard)? I did the same thing until I found the system settings area. I can't remember the name of the specific menu (network maybe) but it is there.
