keep it ventilated..

like i keep the power adapter thing on a box behind the tv.. so its kind of high up and so a little ventilated..

for the xbox360 i put thin sponges on the botton on both sides of the xbox360.. and so far so good

This is why i have been hesitant to buy a 360 and am thinking of buying a PS# because i dont want to deal with the red dings of death and overheating and all the crap you have to deal with if you take the risk and buy the 360

Dont put a Nyko Intercooler on it. I made that mistake thinking it was good for the console. Just keep it on a hard surface where it can breathe and away from a lot of dust and hope for the best.

I rather have an unsable console that has a minor chance of breaking and enjoy playing it, rather then having a big black pile of plastic collecting dust next to my tv.

Short of these precautions, there isn't much you can do. Unfortunately the 360 breaks down much more then any other system, and until Microsoft really nails down the problem and, more importantly, fixes it, this will continue to be a problem. Hopefully the latest ones have these issues fixed, but if not, hopefully soon because this is getting ridiculous.

-Keep your system well ventilated and make sure there is nothing blocking any of the vents.

-Make sure the surface is hard and stable.

-Clear off dust and dirt from your system, especially the vents. Check your vents more often if you have pets.

-Do not keep your system on the carpet.

-Do not move your system while it is on, and especially when a disk is spinning.

-Do not use any of the stupid cooling systems that are on the market.

Other then these things, just hope man. Good luck and enjoy your gaming....while it lasts.:P;)

LKeep it on a hard surface, if you can get a more hardcore fan put in without voiding warranty - do it. and dont get a fan attachment for the back, but very good to get a cooling stand that the 360 can sit in, giving it more ventilation from the bottom (if you have it vertical), but stands dont work if you like your 360 horizontal ( lol ). I had red rings once but got a stand and going stronger than ever now. Oh and dont suffocate the AC adapter. Im disappointed they didnt attack this issue with the Elite, but maybe they dont wanna admit fault, even though they reimburse for repairs related to red rings. See no evil etc..

cooling stands are ok. The 360 sucks from the bottom as well, giving it more air from that end is good.

You should get a laptop cooler. Get an intec they have been proven to lower temperatures to 7 degrees. Also make sure you have the new heatsink. I heard that they are working pretty good, and they do the job. You should also put a fan next to the vent opposite side of your harddrive. I have a 4 inch desk fan and it works great. Its always good to have airflow on your heatsinks. If MS put fans on the heatsinks there wouldn't be any problems, but they didn't. Putting a fan on the back doesn't really help. Even if they are blowing air away from the console. Basically external fans in the back are pushing out hot air that already pushed out by the built in fans. This is the best way to cool your system if you have the new heatsink.
