I think 3 red rings is an over-heating error. You should only be worried when you get one red ring coz im pretty sure that means a serious hardware failure.

actually its the other way around..... 3 equals hardware failure and 1 should be overheat.... sometimes the xbox will show the sign of hardware failure for no reason... its just a glitch

I'm sorry to tell you this but the three rings isn't a glitch. Your 360 is dying its just a matter of time. I suggest you call microsoft right away while your still in warrenty. if not try adding one

umm i turned it back on and it sitll worked...if it keeps happening again ima call microsoft. i still got like a lot of more months of my warrenty left

A power surge also results in the 3 red lights, the system shuts down when this happens to prevent damage, happened to mine when my house power went all off. Just reset the machine and its fine, but 90% of the time its likely hardware failure.
