im using the towel trick right now but im not sure it will work or should i just buy a used 360.

One red light is a DVD drive error. I got it on my HDMI Premium when it was a week old. It wouldn't even release my copy of Rainbow Six: Vegas so I had to pry the tray open with a fork, lol. I just exchanged mine for a new one but you might have to call Microsoft if it's out of the stores return window.
EDIT: I forgot, it also depends on the error code you get when you turn the system on. I had E65 which is the DVD drive. Yours may be different. Check this link to make sure:

ahhhaahhh dont do the towl trick..The one light it the Harddrive error..You have to take the HDD off then reconnect it..that is it..WMDfreeman99

wow... just wow, no one knows how to use there hardware properly, there is a tiny hole on ALL disc drives, its a manual release, lucky you didnt break your drive

I know how to use hardware. There was a tiny hole on the bottom right of the drive housing but nothing on the other side that went into the drive. I spent 10 minutes looking for that hole. Besides, it was only a week old. I knew I was getting a new one so screw the drive, I want my game!
