I remember when i use to play singleplayer games cause they were just plain out fun, but now I find myself when playing trying to get every single achievement, which is even frustrating with dragon age and mass effect, considering in mass effect it well it doesn't force me, but i wan't the achievement so i stick with the same 2 squad members through out the game, or with dragon age on my 2nd playthrough it's not going to be as enjoyable because i'm going to do the opposite of everything i did (which i'm not going to enjoy doing) just for achievements....

Ugh. i know there pointless. but idk, I just wish they never added achievements, i know it was just a bonus add-on

but still. . they get pretty addicting if you ask me. opinions? (btw srry if this is messy im in a rush and typing with one finger

They encourage people to look at different parts of the game that would normally go untouched.

Bringing life to areas if they had no other intent to put content there.

Alderney in GTA 4 was pretty much untouched until the first DLC was out, some of the achievements had you go there for various things. That'd be 1/3 of the map untouched and mostly unseen if people didn't want the achievements.

But still, it forces me to do things I don't enjoy, well Like I said.. it doesn't force me, but you feel a need to get the achievement.. but I guess thats true.. all the work on the dragon age that I didn't do would go untouched..

What you have to realize is that you don't have to do them. I love achivements. I love it when they pop up, but I refuse to do some. I won't beat Dragon Age again. I refuse to beat Mass Effect again. And I refuse to do hidden item achievements.

While you might be addicted to them you have to realize that they aren't something you have to do. I've become someone who just gets the achievements that are easy and fun.

I kinda like the achievements in games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. When I first played through Mass Effect I played as a soldier and was the ultimate nice guy. I didn't really have an interest in being a biotic or acting like a dick. But going back to that game later on I looked at the achievements and decided to play through the first level like this and see what it was like and I got really into it.

Moral of the story: if it wasn't for the achievements, there were many aspects/features of the game/story I probably wouldn't have tried or enjoyed.

I like games that do achievements like this.

On the other hand, I don't like games that do pointless collection achievements that add nothing to the experience (cough Ubisoft cough).

its never been mandatory to get achievements. I could care less about them on the first play through of a game, i dnt even look at them until i go back for a second replay then i will try to get some, but if they are too time consuming or hard a just pass them and go to and easier one. but still if it wasnt for them i prolly wouldn't replay too many games.

Achievments and addictive personalities don't mix well.. personally I don't give a damn about them, if I earn them then fine, if not who cares.. I don't need a high game score to appreciate great games.

Quote fail... I hate it when it happens to me too...

Anyway, once you go to college you have to type everything up buddy. Not that middle/high school stuff. Its best to learn how to type when you're still young. Also, seriously, it looks ridiculous. It shows immaturity and ignorance. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm not trying to put you down, I'm just trying to help you out.

A bad habit, and when you can only represent yourself through written word wouldn't you be more respected if that written word were grammatically correct? Just as someone speaking wouldn't in all good sense speak like an idiot to represent himself, one wouldn't type like that either. Not to call you an idiot or anything, just the example I'm trying to make.

To be honest...I see no reason why achievements can be a negative thing lol, sorry this is unnecessary IMO, It would be a different story if M$ was forcing you to get achievements in order to unlock game modes etc.

I used to be like that, until I realized, what's more important? Having fun playing a game the way YOU want to? Or worrying about having to go for certain achievements that will amount to nothing more than a pointless advancement in gamerscore, which doesn't really mean much to begin with? Yeah, achievements are fun to accumulate, and I enjoy getting them. But I don't think it's fun to do something in a game solely just to get an achievement.

Well Tc it sounds like you are achievements whipped. I like achievements and all but i'm not going to get the ones that just feel like an absolute chore (like the squad member ones in ME, never got any of those). Just enjoy the game.

I kinda see it as a lack of self-control if you cannot stop yourself from getting achievements and end up frustrated because of it. No offense intended.

Myself i decided to achievements hunt lately but not by getting random games simply for the sake of a useless score, simply by replaying my old games i haven't touched in ages.

Then don't do them. Its your own fault for hating them cause you freak out over them.

Achevements might not be anything special, but what they have done to gaming is at least give something more out of them. Instead of just playing a game and finishing it you might go back and play it again once or even twice more to try and do a challenge. It brings more value to gaming.

finish a 8hr Single Player game then never play it again. Or play it through a few times to try the challenges. Makes it much more worth the money sinse you actually spend more time with them.

And I hate when I see that not all achievements are collected after beating the game... Waaa..!

(The easiest is Fight Night 3) ..100 per achievement.. :)
I think im goin to play this game just to get pure 1k xD
But maybe later after MW2 xP

I hate old school arcades. I mean I'd spend pretty much 5 days a week after school heading down to the arcade to see if I could get a new high score. What a waste.

I get you dude. I'm addicted as well. Right now I'm going through Gears of War on Insane, which may not seem that bad but I hate Gears of War. The combat is boring and the story is pathetically diminutive (listening to podcasts helps ease the boringness of it though).

The best way to combat your addiction (lol) is to just find a great game on another platform (not PS3 or you'll just end up addicted to trophies too) and play through it.

Achievements are awesome but Gamerscore and points is what I find dumb.

I like the achievement system. I do sometimes look up how to get some achievements, such as Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts I did this a couple of times for some of the more esotericly described achievements - which turned out to be quite simple - and FIFA09 - mainly for some of the secret ones and the Become a Legend ones. Sometimes I will play a particular mode or difficulty for achievements (FEAR 2 and ODST come to mind). If it comes through the course of the single-player and isn't too insanely difficult or tedious, I'll go for it. I didn't go for the flags acheivements in Assassin's Creed, but if I saw the flags I grabbed them and I also did every mission and climbed every viewpoint but that was mainly because I wanted to do all of those. Some of the games that require mutiple playthroughs I will eventually do, but I have way too many games to play as it is before I get to replaying other games.

its never been mandatory to get achievements. I could care less about them on the first play through of a game, i dnt even look at them until i go back for a second replay then i will try to get some, but if they are too time consuming or hard a just pass them and go to and easier one. but still if it wasnt for them i prolly wouldn't replay too many games. 2pac_makaveli
Im starting to do the same thing.I just play a game. If I get achievements, great. I don't scroll the list and see what I have to do, and that makes a more enjoyable experience, plus its even more fun to see the achievement pop up

I hate achievements too and I hate gamers that care so much for them. "I got more achievements than you so you suck!" OMG its like any game sux if theres no achievements so some d-bags can so off about. Pathetic.

Acheivements are there pretty much for proof,Im gald that they're there because I've gotten into game conversations with friends and told them hey I did such and such and they would say no you didn't then back and forth but they wouldn't believe me when i told them nowI have proof and another reason I like achievements is its nice to kill a final boss then *whatever noise the pop up makes* PWNED the last boss- 50g, it sorta reminds me of a trophy or something and whoever said that acheivements make gamers explore other regions of the game that would normally go unexplored

That happened to me as well. Playing the soldier class was so boring compare to playing as adept or biotic.
