Is your TV widescreen? Also, what is the model number of it. It'll help for checking the native resolution of the TV.

Your TV could have a 16:10 aspect ratio (like most computer monitors) instead of 16:9 which is what the X360 outputs. A 16:10 aspect ratio is quite common on smaller HDTVs. A 16:10 screen is taller than a 16:9 screen hence that could be why you're seeing black bars on the top and bottom.

your tv probably isnt just 720p, but another resolution that is close to it what you need to do is get a vga or hdmi cable (if your 360 has hdmi output, older models dont have one) so that you can match the native resolution on your tv with what is being displayed by the xbox 360 when you have the basic cables, your output resolution is limited to 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p with a VGA cable, you are able to choose from much more specific resolutions that will match your tv, such as 1440 x 900, 1360 x 768, etc

you cannot get 1080p with the standard cables (or even the the hd cables that also come with the console) 1080p can only be achieved through an hdmi cable. you are able to get 1080i but that is pretty much the same as 720p. you need to change the native resolution on your tv.

you can get 1080p with component cables as well.you should find out what the native resolution of your tv is first and if its a computer monitor resolution then get a vga cable

1080p can be achieved using component cables, VGA, DVI or HDMI.

Just put it at 480p. On a 20in HD I really doubt it matters. Check 480 to see if the HD is just as good but without squares or just deal with the squares on 720. I recommend using 480p. Try it.
