I have been thinking... Is the rrod (red ring of death) random?

I've heard that overheating is a big part of it.... I live in Upstate New York, near Canada, and It's always really cold here. My 360 is pretty close (about 2 feet) from a window on either side of it, and I like to think that will keep it cool..... I hope. Just don't play it ALL DAY LONG, go out and snowskate once in a while lol and it won't overheat. ;)

I guess it is random. I know a little bit about so I'll try to explain. The 360 uses a cooling gel system for when the system overheats. When it overheats the gel melts and it closes the heat in so it will eventually overheat and you will get the RROD. They put a new chipset in there, 65nm I think it is called. But I think I am completely wrong so I would be happy if someone corrected me.

I treated mine well for nearly two years, plugged directly into a wall outlet, nothing around it, sat on a cooling stand that uses it's own power source, not sapping power from the 360,... it red ringed this morning. 3 days before its second birthday. That's gotta be like 75 in human years though. Guess it just had enough. Seems like it did better than average.

I think in some cases they'll replace it, but only there's no other fix. The majority of times they just slap a huge heat sink on it and send it back. Pretty disappointing, I want the 65nm chip and quiet fans... but why would they lose 350 dollars on a console when they could lose 100 on a heatsink and maintinence.

Well, seeing as he got the RRoD they will just repair his old console.

You are correct, all they do is wack a new heatsink in. But suprisingly it actually works very well. If they gave you a new console, people would just be buying broken 360's off ebay, sending them into Microsoft and getting a brand new one lol.

Microsoft are not that stupid, they will just repair his console and thats it. But I think if it breaks 3 or more times you can request a brand new console.

Microsoft should just start dishing out thoes better systems, it seems like repaired sysyems just keep failing. It seems like once it fails its just prone to happen repeatedly.I also dont think its not a heat issue, computers get hoter and dont fail nearly as much.Im shure it comes down to cheap thermal paste or poor design or its just a crapshoot. All i know is my friend was given a new upto-date 360 when his failed in october and he had the same RROD as everone elese.

The red ring is seriously the lamest thing that came out of gaming. It makes no sense when you randomly get it.

The RROD sucks for shure i just wish that microsoft whould change the way they deal with it.In early 06 you could send your system in anyway you see fit ,i was able to send it next day air ups ,and i got it fix way faster. The second time it broke is when they added 2 years to the warranty so not only did i have to wait for that stupid box it took awhile to fix. They should let you send it in youre self if youre willing to pay for it.

Hey, you shouldnt be complaining. Microsoft gave us a 3 year warranty which no company would ever ever do.

They also had the guts to come out and admit they made a huge mistake, and are now making up for it.

My second 360 just died on me last week. I didn't get the RRoD though. I just don't get any video but the sound works and this problem is only covered by the one year warranty so I have to pay to get it fixed. Kinda sucks, but oh well. Third times a charm right? Well, here's to hoping!

Well then I am sorry to say, but problems like that are usually from the users mistreating the console. You must take good care of your consoles, especially the 360. Give it lots of room to breathe and make sure it stays cool.

The RRoD is the only 360 error nobody can control, but any other problems or errors and usually from the owner mistreating their console.

its just your 360 overheating. I sent mine in a while back, got a new one and bought a small desk fan i turn on everytime i use it. Isnt louder than the 360 fan and it gives me piece of mind knowing it wont overheat.

I treat mine more like a KING! I have mine half on a cardboard box lying down(so the left bottom fan is free) and then I poked a bunch of holes in the box, so its basically standing on nothing. But a small fish bowl stand would be better. So far so good*knock on wood*

That's total BS because my 360 sits on a 2 drawer file cabnet with nothing around it for at least 3 feet. I have never mistreated my 360 lol.

I think its random. Two of my 360's broke (rrod), but the ones I have now work flawlessly. And they all where treaded the same.

It's not random, there are just multiple reasons for the red ring of death. You can take care of the overheating problem, but still get it for something else.

Here's an interesting interview about it:
