I got the red ring of death and I am awaiting my new xbox-360 from microsoft.... and I treated my xbox like it was a king and some people I know treat it like dirt so i want to know if the red ring of death is random or is it caused by something you do???specs777
Its not going to be a new 360.......they just refurbish your old console.

I think in some cases they'll replace it, but only there's no other fix. The majority of times they just slap a huge heat sink on it and send it back. Pretty disappointing, I want the 65nm chip and quiet fans... but why would they lose 350 dollars on a console when they could lose 100 on a heatsink and maintinence.
Well, seeing as he got the RRoD they will just repair his old console.
You are correct, all they do is wack a new heatsink in. But suprisingly it actually works very well. If they gave you a new console, people would just be buying broken 360's off ebay, sending them into Microsoft and getting a brand new one lol.
Microsoft are not that stupid, they will just repair his console and thats it. But I think if it breaks 3 or more times you can request a brand new console.
Microsoft should just start dishing out thoes better systems, it seems like repaired sysyems just keep failing. It seems like once it fails its just prone to happen repeatedly.I also dont think its not a heat issue, computers get hoter and dont fail nearly as much.Im shure it comes down to cheap thermal paste or poor design or its just a crapshoot. All i know is my friend was given a new upto-date 360 when his failed in october and he had the same RROD as everone elese.
Hey, you shouldnt be complaining. Microsoft gave us a 3 year warranty which no company would ever ever do.
They also had the guts to come out and admit they made a huge mistake, and are now making up for it.
My second 360 just died on me last week. I didn't get the RRoD though. I just don't get any video but the sound works and this problem is only covered by the one year warranty so I have to pay to get it fixed. Kinda sucks, but oh well. Third times a charm right? Well, here's to hoping!opiatedbliss
Well then I am sorry to say, but problems like that are usually from the users mistreating the console. You must take good care of your consoles, especially the 360. Give it lots of room to breathe and make sure it stays cool.
The RRoD is the only 360 error nobody can control, but any other problems or errors and usually from the owner mistreating their console.

That's total BS because my 360 sits on a 2 drawer file cabnet with nothing around it for at least 3 feet. I have never mistreated my 360 lol.
It's not random, there are just multiple reasons for the red ring of death. You can take care of the overheating problem, but still get it for something else.
Here's an interesting interview about it:
