I finally bought myself an HDTV to use with my Xbox 360 Elite.

It's a 40" Samsung LCD flat panel 1080p with 2 HDMI imports [just for my Elite]

From what I understand, this is a pretty high-end HDTV. Retails for about $1500-$1600, but I got it discounted.

Either way, I still feel like it could be better when playing games like Halo 3 and Bioshock. Many of the characters (especially in Halo 3) and pretty choppy looking edges and don't really look that much better on this TV.

Let me know about what you think about my choice and if I could of made a better one!

Thanks!

your graphics arent good? u must be doing something wrong in your setup, and your tv isnt soo "high end", its just a typical hdtv, a high end hdtv is the ones that sell for 3000$ and up.

Halo 3 was formatted in 680p or something like that which means in wasn't done natively in 720p. I was playing at 1080p and i noticed the jaggies also. Now as BioShock.....This game doesn't support widescreen. It was formated at 4:3 ratio insted of the 16:9. It's not your tv is just the games.

The reason chars can look choppy looking isent becouse of your tv. Its the way Halo 3 is :P
Maybe we will see a patch that fix this? Dont know, lets hope so

For the 1080p, I would recommend using 720p simply becouse last i checked the FPS is limited to 30fps on 1080p and 60fps and 720p

Vizios good? Not at all. They are purely budget TVs and cannot hold a candle to the quality Sony, Pioneer, or Samsung TVs offer.

Where did you hear that 1080p was limited to 30 fps (hertz)?

If you got the Samsung 4061f or 4065f series, use these calibrated settings from the avs forums. The settings out of the box are terrible, believe me, these will blow the factory settings out of the water.

Have the 4661F with the post 1500 settings, and it is sexy as all get out. Halo 3 is full of jaggies unrelated to your TV though, like the above posters said.

It is not your TV, but the games themselves that look choppy. I have a 50" Sony 1080p and it looks the same as you describe while playing Halo 3. However HD-DVDs, HD cable channels, and many gameslook BEAUTIFUL.

Yeah, I'm going to get HD cable as soon as Time Warner gets 'em in stock and the HD DVD player attachment for the 360 as soon as I get the money!

And the reason I got a Samsung over a Sony is because I heard that Samsung's "Game Mode" makes it ideal for gaming as far as the frame rate goes.

But thanks to all for your input! I feel a whole lot better knowing that it's not just my TV. =]

Typically, LCDs are great for Hi-Def and have better chances of NOT getting burn in over plasma TVs, but most LCDs don't have a great re-fresh rate, and therefore you see a lot of "ghosting" or "trailing", especially with video games and sports events. However, I doubt this has much to do with your "choppyness", and is really an artifact of the games itself. Try playing Dead Rising. Man that game looks gorgeous in HD.

As an off-topic comment, Plasmas, which can be prone to burn-in or image retention after a long gaming session, have better refresh rates and in some cases make your games look better than an LCD. But again, it all has to do with the quality of the television. I support plasma, but i made the mistake of playing FFXII a little too long one saturday, and now I can still see everyone's HP level burned into the corner of the screen.

Edit: If you can afford it, I HIGHLY recommed getting a Pioneer Elite Plasma screen. They are easily the best HD TVs available. However, it's a little hard on the pocket book.

I think you can fix your plasma problem by leaving it on a white screen all day or something. I dunno, try looking it up

Just because they retail more doesnt mean they have better specs. Samsung 1080p 40" is an excellent lcd, and at bestbuy (where i work) we recommend this TV over others such as sony and toshiba due to its dark blacks and sharp contrast. As for the graphics make sure u have enough distance between u and the tv. For 40" recommended viewing distance is around 15-20 feet.

It's not your TV; Halo 3 looks a choppy normally. Just make sure you're sitting at least 6 feet away from it... :P

Yeah the 4061 and 4661 got great reviews on Cnet, and were rated the #1 LCD in this month's Consumer Reports. They're becoming fairly reasonable in price as well, I paid $1999 Canadian for my 46". My viewing distance is about 10 feet haha.. Will suffer for now so I don't have to buy a bigger TV when I upgrade my housing situation.

just wondering, did you actually change the settings on the 360 when you switched tv's? I'm assuming you had it plugged into a SDtv...

I happen to own a vizio and it has quite good picture and sound quality, and for the price, it is second to none.
