Explore. You make a killing going the evil path. Up your speech, I got 500 caps for dealing with Megaton and 700 for doing the Ghoul quest in the tunnels. Everytime you do something for someone, I try and do the speech bonus where you ask for more money. Sometimes it works...I got 1200 off my first 2 quests.
I think it's harder to make money when you take the good route.
