survival horror games.

Dead space, Alone in the dark, Silent hill homecoming etc.

...because they WERENT SURVIVAL HORROR. They were all ****ing made into damn action shooters just like the resident evil franchise!

I watched a video reviewer for a bunch of awards and dubious awards from the 2008 line up and when i was looking at most disappointing game, silent hill 5 came into perspective.. while i agreed with it and was looking for the host to give it a good blast for the crap that it was, he started mentioning the other games etc.

The first thing that jumped into my head was oh yeah... man those werent scary at all... Then when he mentioned they were all turned into ACTION games with monsters it struck me.

It all makes sense. However i am still looking forward to a good scare when FEAR 2 gets here which i will pick up. Im hoping that one scares the crap out of me.

Sry this is more of less a rant of sorts but i feel it a good personal discovery for myself. hah.

By the way i dont feel dead space, and the RE series are BAD games... i just mentioned that they are no longer survival horror.

completely agree, the survival horror genre has almost been annihilated by action games, however the new resident evil games, although not really scary anymore, achieve a really claustrophobic feeling by throwing hordes of enemies at you and having them surround you from all directions... so although they are not really scary anymore the tension creates a feeling that is quite different from typical action games. I will definitely like to see some REAL survivor horror games be released or at least announced this year. I think re-makes for resident evil 2 & 3 would be great to give the genre a new start, although I will definitely love to see some new franchises go into survival horror.

What would make the game scary to you? Everyone whines about how their horror games are not scary anymore, but were they ever really all that scary? Stop complaining and and tell us what you want in the game. Crappy control scheme does not count. Bad controls DO NOT make a game scary, they make a game frustrating. Those of you who want a return to tank controls can go hang out with the rejects who complain that FF no longer has sprites.

The Condemned franchise are kinda scary. I'm not scared during movies at all and most games, but condemned made me and my wife jump.

Probably another reason why we aren't scared of horror games anymore is because we play them so much, we get used to them. A few years ago, when I played re4, I was scared out of my mind, because it was my first scary game. Now, with dead space, left 4 dead, and re4, I RARELY get scared at all. It kind of desentisized me.

I personally think the scariest games are those of which you aren't expecting to be scary. The original Halo scared the shig out of me when the Flood showed up.

Playing Fear or Condemned all by yourself, lights off at 3am with the sound up = Not a bright idea if you wet your pants easily. However I must say you are most certainly correct about the alot of Horror games coming out these days. RE4 was scary when you met the first chainsaw ganado but then after than you became a god with all the weapons they would leave around for you. It turned from running and surviving the best you can to finding out the best way to destroy the enemy. This is certainly not what resident evil was originally about as you always were scavenging for ammo and weapons to defend yourself.

Play the Cradle level in Thief 3 Deadly Shadows. While it is only a couple of levels, they are the scariest I can remember playing. Alien vs Predator 1 on PC. While it was a FPS you just couldn't play it like a regular game because there were no saves during missions, and one alien attack could easily kill you, then restart the whole level. Dark poorly lit tunnels that you know contain aliens just waiting to run up the walls, across the ceiling, then pounce and rip your throat out. I think to be scary it isn't just having monsters, but the way the game builds a tense atmosphere that unsettles you, then provides shocks and horror. Just blasting through waves of zombies with a shotgun isn't scary, and as L4D proved it can be hilarious, which isn't really something a horror game should be doing. If you are laughing while playing a horror game then they did something wrong.

Me too, I found it completely boring... Even the combat wasn't that great, the bullet time had already been far overplayed when it was released, and the story wasn't scary, or shocking, or anything good for that matter. Now Condemned, on the other hand, I definitely agree with that one. It's still one of the best games I have played on 360.
