A manager of a gamestop the other day told me that gamestop now owns like 70% of the video game market. They have basically bought everyone else out. I thought the govt said that was illegal because you can basically rip off whoever you want because they have no other options......?! How can gamestop own that much of the market, and getting bigger, and nobody say anything?

Who'd they buy out EB? That's all I know of and as long as there's Best Buy I don't think they'll ever have a monopoly.

They will never have a true monopoly of video game sales, because there are numerous online retailers that sell the same games, as well as electronics stores such as Wal Mart, Best Buy and Circuit City. Also, other businesses are getting into game sales as well. Guitar Center sells Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band now, and Toys R Us has sold video games since the days of the NES.

Microsoft has a monopoly on PC operating systems (Windows and Windows Vista), but PCs themselves are made by many different manufacturers. Microsoft was hit with a monopolization lawsuit a few years ago because they required companies to package Windows and Microsoft Office will all PCs, but I think they settled out of court and continue to operate as they always have.

Hopefully the company Play N' Trade starts to pick up more and give GameStop a run for their money. Even though there are other retailers that sell video games, a giant chunk of GameStop's business is in the used market, which is where they could use some competition.

I read in this month's XBOX Magazine that the used game market is becoming more profitable to video game retailers than new titles are. According to the article, retailers like Game Stop that trade used games for store credit turn around and sell those games at a marked up value, making the games nearly pure profit for them when sold. And what's worse, the publishers and developers of that game see none of that resale money. The only money they make is off of new titles that they sell to retailers. So if you want to see more years of great games like the awesome year that 2007 was, spend the extra money and buy new games. The companies that come up with such great games as Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4 and BioShock deserve our support.

axxe, you are correct, and to the person that said they will ALWAYS sell video games? dont bet any money on that......best buy and other retailers are getting rid of huge sections of cd's because people basically dont buy cd's anymore, they dowmload songs.....they are even talking about getting rid of their cd departments completely. If something doesnt make money....its GONE....if people continue to go to gamestop exclusively, for whatever reason.....that 70% will go up and many retailers WILL get out of gaming because it doesnt turn a profit......basic economics

But anyone with common sense knows that is how they would make there money. I mean most of the stores that I go into that is Eb Games, or Gamestop when you go in you see more USED games than you do non used. Kinda sad. I don't trade my games anymore with them. It is better to sell it on ebay or something and make more money than I would get by trading it with them. I remember seeing someone a couple days ago trade in there Wii to Gamestop. He got like.. 100 some bucks out of it and they re sold it for 220$.. Umm hello?

Yea, I don't bother trading games with them. But I do reserve games with them if I can not find it anywhere else.

It's funny that they own 70% of the market. Because around here, Best buy is WAY more reliable and all around better for games than them.

okay....well Microsoft owns 100% of the PC market and nobody says anything about their Monopoly....

Thats not quite right. MS gets into all types of trouble for the stupidest of things. What they were doing was offering Office for like $5 if you put Windows on your computer. Ever5ybody was jumping on it and they got in trouble because that would be unfair to all other word processors who clearly couldn't sell their product for anywhere near that cheap. MS gets introuble for puzzling stuff. They included Internet Explorer and got hit with anti-trust lawsuits because they didn't include a rival browser. But at the same time, if you sell an OS without a web browser, people are gonna call you bogus and say that your OS doesn't offer the features that users want. LOL, thats like suiing Sony because your PS3 didn't come with XBox 360 coupons.

But Gamestop... they are horrible. God they are horrible. I shopped there 3 times. The first time they sold me two broken x-boxes (og xbox) that didn't didn't work as soon as you plugged them up, then they sold me a gamecube with a broken video cable (once again, if they'd even connected the stuff they'd have seen this), then they sold me a broken copy of PDZ for the 360. They are 0-3. I think anyone who says they've had like 3+ broken 360s is getting theres from gamestop. I have no doubt that they take one broken 360, put it in abox and gladly sell it to the next person who comes in asking for a used 360. They... they aren't gamer friendly at all. They may know more about release dates than the Best Buy guy, but when best buy sells you something it works. its rare for it not to work.

That happened to me too. I bought a used 360 pro with the hard drive, took it home and the rings started flashing when I turned it on. I returned it and got another one. It worked fine, until I put in a game and then it froze. I took that one back and got a third used console. That one wouldn't even play games at all. Finally I went back, threw a big fit and got a discount on a 360 Elite. Haven't had a problem since. I buy games from them, but I would trust their used consoles about as far as I could throw one of their stores.

A United States Monopoly isn't a Majority, its a complete and 100% domination. 360 will NEVER be 100% because the Wii, PS3, PS2, DS, PSP, etc etc etc.

I doubt that they will ever take WALMART, or BEST BUY (Future Shop), I bought a lot of games last year and only one from an Gamspot owned store, not to mention the fact that their pricing on new games is not great, they are always cheaper at WALMART or Best Buy. They probably factor in used game sales to bump up their numbers and they will never have the money to take WALMART or BEST BUY out of the market so who really cares.

Gamestop owns 70% of video game specialty stores is what the guy meant. They cannot have a 70% share of the market considering just about every other store out there sells video games its impossible for them to take over stores like Best Buy and Wal-Mart.

no, they really do own 70% of the market! You can look it up, gamestop stock has risen dramatically because of it. No, they are not looking to buy walmart, best buy etc. They are looking to push them out of the business. Basically if 90% of the people in your town shop for their video games at gamestop, then 10% go to best buy....walmart etc......what is going to happen? The walmart, BB will reduce their stock until there is no more video game section because it doesnt turn a profit.

Its just 70% of sales, not gamestop makes up 70% of distributors which is what I tought you meant . In terms of how many distributition venues there are GameStop is one store against every other store out there because just about every store sells video games. Its not a monopoly not even close. Your statement clarified that for me. If GameStop was somehow forcing you to shop there to get video games then it would but its just being sucessful.

You also have to think aboutplaces like Wal-Mart, K Mart, Sears, Best Buy, Circuit City, GameCrazy, CostCo, Sams Club, and Sam Goody.

Those stores are a fraction of the 100%. GameStop may be big, but never in a million years could they buy a few of those stores. So as long as they dont own 100% of the market, its not a monopoly

In the long run Gamestop will just ruin itself if it keeps it up, just like Starbucks. Starbucks has expanded so much since they first started that they are slowly killing themselves since their only competition is with themselves, thats why they are closing lots of Starbucks nationwide.

because you can buy games at walmart, target, bestbuy, the list goes on infinately. Now if they were the only place to buy games then it's a monopoly. Plus, the must mean %70 of video game specialty stores because walmart still owns like 40% of the games market in terms of selling.

All the manager meant was that 70% of stores completely dedicated to video games are now Gamestops. They don't have 70% of the overall market though, because video games are also sold by general retailers. They will never have a monopoly.

Actually they did buy out EB Games, but 70% is not a monopoly, Best Buy and WalMart are still competition. Also, the government does allow some monopolies, like in Florida, where I live in, Florida Power and Light has a monopoly, but the government regulates their prices.

Gamestop has lots of competition. The only thing they more or less dominate is used game sales in brick & mortar stores. There are plenty of ways to buy and sell used games on the internet though.

I wouldn't consider Gamestop to be a monopoly. I could easily never shop there again and still get everything I need.

Microsoft tried merging with Apple in the 90's this was during the period when they were getting sued for being a monopoly. They couldn't do it so instead of just absorbing Apple they are partners now. Apple still makes macs with their own OS but they also make Macs with windows. And macs have windows programs on them now too. And Apple products like itunes/ipod/iphone work with windows OS, windows even comes bundled with the itunes program. Yet in the commercials they "compete" against each other. Because even if you buy windows you are supporting mac in some way big or small and vice versa if you buy a mac you are supporting windows. They avoided the monopoly suit by just partnering to improve revenue instead of just boldy taking over the market.

#1 MS never planned to merge with apple. #2 MS paid money into apple to keep them a float thus giving MS leverage with the DOJ #3 There are no Windows applications on MacOS

Gamestop/EBGames is not a monopoly anymore than Walmart is. There are plenty of other ways for you to obtain video games. In order to be a monopoly a company has to be able to raise it's prices at will rather than being subject to supply and demand. This is not the same as saying, if they raise their prices then they are a monopoly. Prices increase due to increased demand or reduced supply. It's when there is plenty of supply (or very little demand) and a company can charge high prices anyway that the worries about a monopoly come in to play.

[QUOTE="Ket87"]Microsoft tried merging with Apple in the 90's this was during the period when they were getting sued for being a monopoly. They avoided the monopoly suit by just partnering to improve revenue instead of just boldy taking over the market. teebeenz
#1 MS never planned to merge with apple. #2 MS paid money into apple to keep them a float thus giving MS leverage with the DOJ #3 There are no Windows applications on MacOS

are you kidding? there are windows apps on Mac's. Microsoft Word 2008,Microsoft Excel 2008, microsoft office 2008 for mac, Windows Media Player. the first two are correct though

Those are apps made by Microsoft, not windows applications.
